Visual interpretation of shamanism on T-shirts [a story of cooperation with Medicine Brand)

in OnChainArt4 years ago (edited)

Hi guys! 🙏

Today I want to share with you a story of my first big assignment, which was making T-shirt projects for Medicine. I tried to make contact with them before without success and one day my friend asked me if I want to try working with them. After I replied that I tried to but without any result, she gave me a contact for her manager (as she was working atm in one of their shops) and they liked my style and proposed me my own collection. I was thrilled!

I thought about making a story of shamans, spirits and wilderness and gathered first inspirations:

At first they told me to make 8 concepts out of my topic, which was harder task than it seemed! I took a paper and wrote down every association my mind came with and secondly I divided them into eight different stories:

  • beauty of nature (especially jungle)
  • dangerous spirits
  • passion and fury
  • loneliness of a shaman
  • burden of a healer
  • masks we wear
  • life and death as one
  • tradition of primitive tribes

As I finished thinking I started sketching and my mind was broad open for ideas 🚀

Soon after I began my work on selected concepts things have changed. I was told that a bigger collection is going to happen and my art was selected to be placed with (quote) 'the best artists of the season' and it's going to be better promoted than individual's collection. Instead of 8 projects I had to make 4...

Well, OK! If it's a better option for me to promote then why not? - I thought although I was a bit disappointed I cannot show every one of my projects to the bigger audience.

Some of them are still about to be completed, like the one below:

Finally after few months of hard work and endless color corrections 4 of the projects were complete and I was proud of myself I did it!

1. Masks

2. Forest Spirit

3. Jungle

4. Shaman Pattern

Sadly, only two of them were pushed into production and I wasn't informed about it :(
Also despite many corrections of color and composition the originals were changed without consultation...

What became of it?

why have you cropped the skull like that?? 😞

this one looks nice

I was disappointed that two of the projects were not used at all (roughly 100 work-hours spend on them), it wasn't as promoted as they said and money wasn't so great but seeing people around wearing one of my designs - absolutely priceless :)

Happily, my mark was printed on the T-shirts labels so I'm not a complete anonymous

It was a big adventure for me and I gained a lot of experience which is the most important part in that story 😇

Thank you for your time and have an amazing day, everyone! 💜

Congratulations! I personally think that medicine has the best designs on their shirts. I own many myself:)

Thanks!
Yes, I totally agree with you :)
I hope to try to work with them again some day but on a different basis

WOW, these are super COOL!

Looking at the pictures, I think I do like your darkler colours better than the final ones on the t's.

Very unfortunate the people you created it for handled the things like they did. Why indeed not consult you when making changes? I do very much hope this gig will give you some good references for a next one. Maybe with other people? Or maybe with the same, when they let you. Always good to build up a portfolio. Aside to that, you may also try and launch your own shop selling your own creations. Though this would be harder to get to an audience, but I would consider to do that in parallel!

For how much are these t-shirts sold btw?

Firstly thank you so much for support 🙏
Secondly, well... I tried to open my own shop and to sell my projects by myself but it's not that simple mainly because of lack of audience. Even if I have 2,5K people on my Facebook fanpage I still have to pay more than I earn if I want to let know I'm actually selling anything, otherwise maybe a 100 ppl would see the info and less than 1% is actually interested in buying anything.
My T-shirts in Medicine were sold for approx 15-25$ (depending on which week of sale) and if I want to start my own shop I would have to invest at least few thousands dollars if I want it to be profitable, otherwise I can get less than 5$ for a t-shirt and sell maybe 10 of them total, sadly...
But maybe some day, who knows :)

yea, its hard to get the audience indeed. did you try Etsi? and other platforms like that?
one of the hard side of fashion is the fact one need to have different sizes, making it quite costly.
15-25$ is not much in my country. depends of course on the quality of the material. when high quality, and prints stay good after washing, and cotton is high grade, 25$ is very inexpensive in my country.
hope you'll be able to get somewhere! :)

Yeah I know etsy but each site like that can be very helpful when you have strong social media promotion and honestly at this moment I am more into gardening and traditional painting (spiritual stuff) and hard promoting is too exhausting. I'm not saying 'no' but I rather focus on real people now, on teaching and sending good vibes all around :)

Thats more than COOL, thats SUPER COOL! :)

Looks good

Definitely great shirts. Thanks for telling us and sharing your experiences. I have enjoyed it.

Thank you :) have a nice day 🙏

Truly lovely patterns you have here, and it looks pretty good on a t-shirt too ❤️! It's pretty awesome, though I'd lie if I won't be at least a bit freaked out to see someone coming up to me with this on 😶

Thanks!
Well that wasn't my intention to scare anyone 😜

I love the designs.. very creative and unique. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you 🙏
