Art Attack #138: Itto the Trolly Oni from Genshin Impact! 👹

Hey Hive!

We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!

If you missed my post from 2 weeks ago, I shared about a new series I started where I use this template to draw different characters based on suggestions from my viewers on Twitch!

I decided to make a channel redemption where viewers could use their channel points to get me to sketch a character from their favourite series! So I would do a quick sketch on stream, and then polish it up after the stream on my own time. This was back when NFTs were still a thing and I was thinking of venturing into it, but needed a series of characters and I thought this was a good starting point.

image.png

Of course this costs quite a lot of points since it interrupts the stream and I have to setup my iPad and sketch. My mod, Nightsy was the first person to redeem this and after the first one, he requested I draw Itto from Genshin Impact! He was a new character that got released at the time and this is what he looks like in-game:

image.png

So after the first one I did I learned to put a time limit on stream so I wouldn't take up too much time, especially since I draw quite slowly. So I gave myself about 5 minutes to sketch on stream and this was what I came up with:

image.png

It looked pretty okay, but after I outlined and coloured this version I thought it was kinda meh. I was initially just lazy to draw Itto with his claymore but after I drew him proper it felt like something was missing.

image.png

So it's back to the drawing board and I reworked the sketch to include his claymore. Turns out I wouldn't actually need to change too much, it's just his arms and the actual weapon behind his back.

image.png

From there I could retain most of the outline and colour from the first version just with a few tweaks.

image.png

And after adding the colours I thought he looked a lot better this way, and I think this pose definitely captured his personality better, although I'm still salty over Genshin not giving him more buff arms.. That's the whole reason why his arms look noodley - it's because he's actually not that buff in-game, weirdly enough.

For the background I wanted something cool but also simple. And I thought of incorporating Itto's oni symbol, which appears when he uses his ultimate in-game.

image.png

So I pretty much traced the oni symbol with a light pen, then added in same extra effects like clouds and mist behind him to give it more detail.

image.png

It's a shame that he blocks most of the symbol but I also used the symmetry tool to make it and it came out really well! You can check it out in the timelapse here:

When I first saw Itto I thought he was going to be a badass gangster character but Genshin really surprised me by making him into such a troll, joke character instead. While he might not be the brightest, he's still really sweet and definitely has the best voice actor in the game. Here's a clip of one of my favourite lines:

Hope you're liking this series and thanks so much for reading!
