"Which is Upside Down"

You might think it's a strange title. This painting is based on the image of Amanohashidate, a scenic spot in northern Kyoto. There is a custom called Mata Nozoki in Amanohashidate that looks like heaven and earth are reversed when viewed from between the legs. (Details http://www.amanohashidate.jp/matanozoki/) Like Amanohashidate, I wanted to draw interesting pictures even if I turned them upside down, so I drew this picture. But when I actually drew it, it was easy to decide which to put up.

なんて変なタイトルだ、と思われるかもしれません。これは京都府北部にある景勝地の、天橋立からイメージを膨らませて描いたものです。天橋立は股の間からのぞくと天地が逆転したように見える「股のぞき」という風習があります。（詳細 http://www.amanohashidate.jp/matanozoki/ )天橋立にならって逆さにしても面白い絵を描こうと思いこの絵を描きました。でもいざ描いてみると、どちらを上にするかはすんなり決まってしまいましたね。
