For all of you who are here for the first time, here are some basic info necessary to follow the events at the strongest chess tournament of all time. It is important to know that, so you could understand the drama – hey, big money is at stake!

The time control is 15 minutes plus 10-second increment per move from move one, for the entire game. In the knockout phase we have two days match-ups, with a 4-game match each day. If the match score is equal, the tie is decided in a blitz tiebreak. Two 5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment blitz games are played, followed if needed, by an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black.

Временска контрола је 15 минута плус 10 додатних секунди по потезу од првог потеза, за целу партију. У нокаут фази имамо дводневне мечеве, сваки дан са по 4 пертије. Ако је резултат на мечу изједначен, победник се одлучује цугерима у тај-брејку. Играју се две цурер-партије од 5 минута плус 3 секунде, а по потреби следи Армагедон пртија, у којој бели има 5 минута а црни 4, међутим реми се рачуна као победа црног.

Having clarified this, let’s see what happened in the quarterfinals. Three American players passed the qualifications – a Philippine American, an Italian American and a Japanese American – and two candidates for the world champion: Fabiano Caruana, the previous candidate and Ian Nepomniachtchi, the current candidate. Everything promised a fierce spectacle. The players did not disappoint us, and after two days of breaknecking games, all top four players from the qualifications lost the matches! Maxime Vachier-Lagrave was the first to say goodbye to the Bitcoin award, when the Philippine American Wesley So beat him in both matches:

Soon after, Anish Giri went off. Probable future World Champion candidate and a man with the greatest fan following could not do more than four unproductive draws in the second, decisive day of a match against Teimour Radjabov.

The most exciting match was the one between World Champion Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura. Out of a total of ten games (eight rapid and two blitz), only two ended in a draw! On the first day Nakamura took the lead, Carlsen equalized. Then Nakamura took the lead again and Carlsen equalized. On the second day Nakamura took the lead, Carlsen equalized. Do you notice the pattern? Then, exhausted, they drew twice and came to a tie-break. And here we have a new big twist of a plot: Hikaru Nakamura has the highest rating in blitz games – 2900! Yes, he is better than Carlsen (2886). So, he was a potential favorite in the tie-break, however… You can already guess. A weaker opening put him in an awkward position in which he blundered the entire Bishop!

Најузбудљивији меч био је онај између светског шампиона Магнуса Карлсена и Хикару Накамуре. Од укупно десет партија (осам рапид темпом и два цугера) само су се две завршиле ремијем! Првог дана Накамура је повео, Карлсен изједначио. Затим је Накамура опет повео, а Карлсен изједначио. Другог дана Накамура је повео, Карлсен изједначио. Примећујете шему? Затим су исцрпљени двапут ремизирали и дошли до тај-брејка. И овде имамо нови велики заплет: Хикару Накамура има највиши рејтинг у цугер партијама – 2900! Да, бољи је од Карлсена (2886).
