Peter Grill to Kenja no Jikan Anime Review

in The Anime Realm3 years ago

It's also called Peter Grill and the Philosopher's of Time. Authored by Daisuke Hiyama, known also for their other published works like Senjou no Mahou Tsukai.

The image below sums up what you're going to get out of the show. There's ecchi, romantic comedy, ecchi, fantasy, and ecchi. I came across this recommendation from a friend sharing a clip from the pilot episode. Spoiler alert if you want to continue reading.

If you're into lewd comedy, this anime pushed some boundaries I never thought I'd see on anime. I haven't read the manga version nor does it interest me after watching the full season.

Plot:

Peter Grill earned the title of the world's strongest warrior from an international tournament. It was a way to prove himself worthy to take Luvelia's hand in marriage against the wishes of their guild leader (happens to be Luvelia's father). After earning the title, Peter Grill became the target of females belonging to a different race for his seed. Their objective is to continue a bloodline of strong warriors for the survival of their race.

We watch as Peter Grill struggles to keep his pursuit of marrying Luvelia while her father tries to stop at nothing to end their relationship. If that isn't enough, we also get to see how he tries to hide his infidelity from Luvelia with other women joining in his harem.

Characters:

Watching all 12 episodes felt more like watching the problem for the week per episode for our hero. There's not much character development going on. There's no growth in terms of learning from their mistakes and doing better next time message. Instead we are just handed situations where our common comical archetypes play their roles right.

The only thing this show puts effort into is how Peter Grill struggles to keep it in his pants while the female casts try to keep it off. Well it is the point of the show so I can't blame them if the budget have enough for character development.

Overall Impression and Conclusion:

I watched the uncensored subbed version. If you want to get the full experience for lewd, you got to go uncensored. They only held back on revealing the genitalia but that's expected due to censorship laws. Watching it censored feels out of place when the visual context suggests how seductive a character can be for our hero's eyes. We're grown up enough to understand context and nudity.

The jokes are ok. But one striking detail I noticed about this anime is how bold it has jumped from the usual ecchi tropes and innuendos. I don't watch ecchi often so I don't know if this has been an ongoing trend I missed on modern shows. But the jokes and situations implied was a leap from the old lewd skits I was familiar with ecchi.

Maybe it's just the localization of the translations but if the translations were close to the context of what these characters were saying, there's a lot of gold mine there. There are just some terms in Japanese that there are no equivalents in English. Just read the subs and you'll find creative ways to say semen.

It's one of those shows where you just watch to pass the time to get a good laugh. The conflicts per episode don't necessarily foreshadow what comes on the next episode but even without foreshadowing you can expect the same amount of shenanigans. I'm expecting season 2 would have the same level of comedy but heading towards building an actual character story arc.

Again, I haven't read the source material for this guess work. Is this anime worth your time? I suppose if you are into ecchi and comedy. But not for me, I wouldn't mind lewd and comedy mixed if it had an underlying story that could me engaged with the characters. I think the show is best enjoyed uncensored. It's not like white fade outs on screen would keep viewers clueless on what's going on.
