Greetings, Hive! It's easy to think what my favorite type of anime is, since to be honest, I don't know too many. I've said it before and I repeat it again this time; I don't consider myself a diehard anime fan nor much less a great connoisseur, I watch anime in my free time to distract myself and forget a bit about everyday life problems, so I'm not always looking for extremely complex and pretentious stories that make me reconsider my existence, I have enough with my own problems, and the anime that does this to perfection is shonen, so yes, my favorite type of anime is shonen, but why?
So without any further ado, let's start!
I want to point out that I’m not discrediting any type of anime or plot, everyone can watch and enjoy what they want, I’m just talking about my tastes.
One of the biggest mistakes when talking about anime or manga is that its demographics are often confused with its genre; shonen is not a genre, it’s a demographic that is especially aimed at teenage males between 10 and 18 years old, this means that within shonen exists different genres such as: fighting, sports, cooking, etc. What changes between, for example, a shonen and a seinen, is the way the story is told.
Shonen is usually associated with fairly simple stories of good versus evil, while seinen is associated with deep and adult plots, because its demographic is male adults from 18 years of age. Usually shonens have not very deep in personality male protagonists with a fairly high level of charisma, in order for audience to empathize with the characters and feel identified, the perfect example for this is Goku from Dragon Ball, or Naruto Uzumaki from Naruto. The cast that accompanies the protagonist usually also follows certain patterns; there is always the protagonist's rival, the best friend who is just as dumb as the protagonist, the romantic interest, the intelligent character, etc.
Usually the plots present more or less simple developments, where there is a conflict between the good guys and the bad guys, friendship and the resolution of many conflicts through this is usually a fairly recurrent theme in these stories, and in many occasions the plot is usually left with plot holes since the plot moves as a function of the protagonist and not organically by itself. Fights or action scenes are also fundamental in shonens, they are usually the most expected moments of the whole series and have a more elaborate animation than the rest of the chapters (not always).
Dragon Ball and Naruto
Obviously within this vast world of shonen I have my favorite works, either because of how much I enjoyed watching them or their overall quality. As every kid born in the late 90's, one of the first series I watched in this style was Dragon Ball Z, which we can call the father of modern shonen. Dragon Ball had everything a 9 year old kid needed to see: action, screams, transformations, blood, and epic fights. Of course, the logic was still left to us.
Years later, during my teenage years, I would meet Naruto. Although Dragon Ball and Naruto share many similarities in terms of their formula, the execution was very different. Naruto always appealed for a more complex and elaborate plot something that even led to their fights; the fights in Naruto were solved in incredibly ingenious ways and thanks to the tactical intelligence of our protagonists, and not by sheer brute force. It's a pity that eventually the author, Kishimoto, resorted to those same power ups out of nowhere that made it so different from Dragon Ball.
Shingeki no Kyojin and Boku no Hero Academia
Around the age of 17 for silly reasons I stopped watching anime, simply because I was a teenager and watching anime was very frowned upon among people my age... What can I say? When you're a teenager the social pressure can be really bad, but anyway... After that pause I resumed in 2014 with Shingeki No Kyojin. This anime reawakened my fanaticism towards this Japanese art and its first season simply blew my mind, and to this day it’s one of my favorite anime (so much so that I have a tattoo of Eren on my left arm). A curious fact about SNK is that it has all the elements to be considered a seinen, but its publication is in a shonen magazine so... That's a debate for a separate post.
If Shingeki No Kyojin was the anime that reawakened my fanaticism, Boku no Hero Academia was the point of no return. The green Naruto anime hooked me and moved me from the first moment with the story of the poor Midoriya, I was also fascinated by the creativity and the use of quirks in this world. BNHA keeps all the typical shonen characteristics but I think it executes them in a masterful way, it's simple and enjoyable to watch, its characters are very lovable, and it has incredibly epic moments that will make more than one of you shed a tear.
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and HunterxHunter
I watched these two anime not too long ago, less than a year, if I'm not mistaken, and without a doubt they are THE BEST I've ever seen. I enjoyed them both as I haven't enjoyed an audiovisual work for a long time, and they definitely revived my inner child hahaha. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood presented us with a work that we can call perfect without fear of being wrong, everything is incredibly well executed, each character develops at the same time as the plot, not a second of screen time is wasted. A work that even someone who isn’t an anime fan should enjoy at least once in their life.
Although I might consider FMAB the best shonen (or even anime) I've seen, I liked HunterxHunter better. Again, personal opinion. HxH could be considered almost a deconstruction of shonen, we have all the typical stuff, but better... And not only that, it also dares to enter into terrains that are supposed to "belong" to seinen. It's a story that revolutionizes everything I had seen so far and I think it set the bar so high that every time I watch a new anime I'll end up comparing it to HxH.
What I like most about shonen is the fact that they make me feel hope. I have to confess, I have a chicken heart, and these kinds of stories where the main characters struggle and fight together with all their might to overcome some obstacle strike a chord in my heart. Life is very hard on its own and many times we need something to make us feel good and make us feel like we can keep fighting, shonens are expert at making us feel this. As I said at the beginning of the post, we don't always have to look for something life changing, we don't always have to want to be deep or intellectual, it's okay to want to watch something just to be entertained and have a good time, after all that's the point of the entertainment industry, isn't it?
Fight, believe in yourself, overcome your limits, go beyond, never give up, pursue your dreams. Not everything will always be bad, and if everything is bad then it isn’t the end of your road yet, trust your friends and surround yourself with people that motivate you to keep going.

¡Saludos, Hive! Es fácil pensar cuál es mi tipo de anime favorito, ya que para ser sinceros, no conozco demasiados. Lo he dicho anteriormente y lo repito de nuevo en esta ocasión; no me considero un fanático acérrimo del anime ni mucho menos un gran conocedor, veo anime en mí tiempo libre para distraerme y olvidarme un poco de los problemas del día a día, por lo que no siempre estoy buscando historias extremadamente complejas y pretenciosas que me hagan replantearme mi existencia, suficiente tengo con mis propios problemas, y el anime que hace esto a la perfección es el shonen, por lo que sí, mi tipo de anime favorito es el shonen, pero ¿por qué?.
Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!
Quiero acotar que no estoy desprestigiando ningún tipo de anime o trama, cada quién puede ver y disfrutar lo que quiera, solo hablo de mis gustos.
Uno de los más grandes errores al hablar de anime o manga es que se suele confundir su demografía con su género; shonen no es un género, es una demografía que va especialmente dirigida a varones adolescentes entre 10 y 18 años, esto quiere decir que dentro del shonen pueden existir distintos géneros como: peleas, deportes, cocina, etc. Lo que cambia entre por ejemplo, un shonen y un seinen, es su manera de contar la historia.
Se suele asociar al shonen con historias bastante sencillas del bien contra el mal, mientras que al seinen se le asocia con tramas profundas y adultas, debido a que su demografía es adultos varones a partir de 18 años de edad. Normalmente los shonen tienen a protagonistas masculinos no muy profundos en personalidad y con un nivel de carisma bastante alto, esto para que el público pueda empatizar con los personajes y sentirse identificado, el ejemplo perfecto es Goku de Dragon Ball, o Naruto Uzumaki de Naruto. El cast que acompaña al protagonista normalmente también sigue ciertos patrones; siempre está el rival del protagonista, el mejor amigo que es igual de tonto que el protagonista, el interés romántico, el personaje inteligente, etc.
Usualmente las tramas presentan desarrollos más o menos sencillos, donde hay un conflicto entre los buenos y los malos, la amistad y la resolución de muchos conflictos a través de esta suele ser un tema bastante recurrente en estas historias, y en muchas ocasiones la trama suele quedar con vacíos argumentales ya que esta se mueve en función del protagonista y no orgánicamente por sí misma. Las peleas o escenas de acción también son fundamentales en el shonen, suelen ser los momentos más esperados de toda la serie y tienen una animación más trabajada que el resto de los capítulos (no siempre).
Dragon Ball y Naruto
Obviamente dentro de este vasto mundo del shonen tengo mis obras favoritas, bien sea por lo que he disfrutado viéndolas o por su calidad general. Como todo niño nacido a finales de los 90 una de las primeras series que vi de este estilo fue Dragon Ball Z, al que podemos llamar como el padre del shonen moderno. Dragon Ball tenía todo lo que un niño de 9 años necesitaba ver: acción, gritos, transformaciones, sangre, y peleas épicas. Eso sí, la lógica nos la quedó debiendo.
Años más tarde, durante mi adolescencia, conocería a Naruto. A pesar de que Dragon Ball y Naruto comparten muchas similitudes en cuanto a su fórmula, la ejecución era muy distinta. Naruto siempre apeló por una trama más compleja y elaborada cosa que llevó incluso a sus peleas; las peleas en Naruto se resolvían de maneras increíblemente ingeniosas y gracias a la inteligencia táctica de nuestros protagonistas, y no por pura fuerza bruta. Es una lástima que eventualmente el autor, Kishimoto, recurriera a esos mismos power ups de la nada que la hacían tan distinta de Dragon Ball.
Shingeki no Kyojin y Boku no Hero Academia
Alrededor de los 17 años por razones tontas dejé de ver anime, simplemente porque era adolescente y ver anime estaba muy mal visto entre la gente de mi edad… ¿Qué puedo decir? Cuando eres adolescente la presión social puede ser realmente mala, pero en fin… Luego de esa pausa retomé en el 2014 con Shingeki No Kyojin. Este anime despertó nuevamente mi fanatismo hacia este arte japonés y su primera temporada simplemente me voló la mente, y al día de hoy es uno de mis anime favoritos (tanto que tengo un tatuaje de Eren en mi brazo izquierdo). Un dato curioso acerca de SNK es que tiene todos los elementos para considerársele como un seinen, pero su publicación es en una revista shonen así que… Es un debate para un post aparte.
Si Shingeki No Kyojin fue el anime que despertó de nuevo mi fanatismo, Boku no Hero Academia fue el punto de no regreso. El anime del Naruto verde me enganchó y conmovió desde el primer momento con la historia del pobre Midoriya, y también me fascino la creatividad y el uso de los quirks en este mundo. BNHA cumple con todas las características típicas del shonen pero creo que las ejecuta de forma magistral, es sencillo y agradable de ver, sus personajes son muy queribles, y tiene momentos increíblemente épicos que le harán soltar una lágrima a más de uno.
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood y HunterxHunter
Estos dos anime los vi hace no mucho, menos de un año, si no me equivoco, y sin duda son LO MEJOR que he visto. Ambos los disfruté como no disfrutaba una obra audiovisual desde hacía muchísimo tiempo, y definitivamente revivieron mi niño interior jajaja. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood nos presentó una obra que podemos llamar perfecta sin temor a equivocarnos, todo está increíblemente bien ejecutado, cada personaje se desarrolla al mismo tiempo que la trama, no se desperdicia ni un segundo de pantalla. Una obra que incluso alguien que no sea fan del anime debería disfrutar al menos una vez en su vida.
A pesar de que podría considerar a FMAB como el mejor shonen (o incluso anime) que he visto, a mí me gustó más HunterxHunter. Nuevamente, opinión personal. HxH podría considerarse casi una deconstrucción del shonen, tenemos todo lo típico, pero mejor… Y no solo eso, también se atreve a entrar en terrenos que se supone que “pertenecen” al seinen. Es una historia que revoluciona todo lo que había visto hasta el momento y creo que puso la barra tan alta que cada vez que vea un anime nuevo lo voy a terminar comparando con HxH.
Lo que más me gusta del shonen es el hecho de que me hacen sentir esperanza. Tengo que confesarlo, tengo corazón de pollo, y este tipo de historias en las que los protagonistas se esfuerzan y pelean juntos con todo su poder para sobrepasar algún obstáculo tocan fibras sensibles en mi corazón. La vida es muy dura por sí sola y muchas veces necesitamos algo que nos haga sentir bien y que nos haga sentir que podemos seguir peleando, el shonen es experto haciéndonos sentir esto. Como dije al principio del post, no siempre tenemos que buscar algo que nos cambie la vida, no siempre tenemos que querer ser profundos o intelectuales, está bien que queramos ver algo solo por entretenernos y pasar un buen rato, después de todo ese es el punto de la industria del entretenimiento, ¿no?
Peleen, crean en ustedes mismos, superen sus límites, vayan más allá, no se rindan nunca, persigan sus sueños. No todo estará mal siempre, y si todo está mal pues aún no es el final de su camino, confíen en sus amigos y rodéense de personajes que los motiven a seguir adelante.

Dragon Ball es un clásico atemporal, aunque entiendo que a muchas personas no les llame la atención, igualmente podrías darle una oportunidad.
