And Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe (OVA) Review

I've been a big fan of Jojo's for a while now, and when a friend decided to do a group stream of this I figured I'd jump on to give it a watch. For those wondering if you need to watch the main show before this, the answer is sort of yes. The show never really explains what a Stand is, so you would need to have watched the main series to get that. More specifically you'd need to have seen Part four, Diamond is Unbreakable, to understand how Rohan's Stand, Heaven's Door, actually operates. So to understand some of the rules of the show you need to have watched the main series, but the actual stories are all stand-alone tales that don't require knowledge of the show to follow.

I will say that while it's marketed as horror, the show fails at that. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure just gets to be too silly of a show at times to take it in as a horror, and this extends to here. It tends to undercut its own horror when you take any time to think about what's going on, or just how goofy and over the top some of the stuff can get. For example, doing my best to not spoil the twist, the first story is about a guy who is cursed after basically being cruel to a homeless man by forcing him to work for any kind of food even though he hadn't eaten in days. The man dies and ends up cursing the one main character of this little story, a curse that will take hold on the happiest day of his life. And, as it so turns out, this 'curse' is really, really stupid in how effective it is. It kind of turned an otherwise really interesting tale of Karma and revenge into a really bad joke.

If you ignore the horror elements of the stories though, most of them hold up as just fun little stories taking place across the world of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. My favorite being a small villa that punishes people who wish to live there that fail to uphold proper manners. If you pass the test you get in, but for every etiquette faux Pau, you make the gods of the land take something important from you. Hold your teacup in the wrong manner? Guess your mother dies in a car accident. This is not me making anything up, that happens. It sounds dumb, but that is kind of part of Jojo's overall charm. It can take some pretty over-the-top and crazy ideas and commit to them enough that regardless of the nature of them, you still manage to get invested.

There isn't a connecting theme between the four stories told, and you don't even need to watch them in any particular order. As I said, you already need to understand how Heaven's Door works to follow a couple of the stories here and get what's going on (And the instance of this show that makes absolutely no sense when you realize what's going on in the fourth story), so you already kind of know how you feel about the anime by this point. If you liked part four of Jojo's, and Rohan in particular, it's a fun watch. You get what you like out of Jojo's with some new and interesting stories. So long as you aren't going in looking for horror, you'll most likely come out happy to have watched it.

I don't know if it was the way you described everything or the way I imagined it but I've fallen in love with the context. I'm very interested, I'll be looking to see it right away. What interested me the most was the village that punishes those who have inadequate manners. I've never seen Jojo's because I didn't have enough interest until now, when I read your review.
