By the Grace of God: Ryoma's guide to being a good employer!

There will be some definite spoilers in one aspect but nothing major that it'll ruin it to you if you haven't watched it and plan to do so after reading this.

By the Grace of God or its Japanese title “Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko” is an Isekai anime about a Japanese Salary Man/office worker who dies and summoned to another world by three gods. Its start is pretty common in most Isekai anime that provides a little context of the world, why the Main Character(MC) is summoned, and their special traits.

From what I judge the MC named Ryoma Takebayashi, is a late twenty's to an early thirty's office worker, he starts life as an 8-year-old boy living in a forest that tames slimes. Ever since the anime That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime I think slimes has found a new sense of respect as often it is depicted in anime and video games as the weakest monsters.

Fast forward 3 years Ryoma encounters a group of travelers deep in the forest and his life is forever changed.

He ventures out of the forest and into his first town where he gets his status board, joins guilds, and meet several people. Magic, adventure, and beastkin as you would expect an anime in a fantasy medieval world of nobility, merchants, and adventurers trying to live their life.

The anime is pretty wholesome and cute. Season one set to an easy pace that is not too heavy and has enough things to make it interesting and good for a binge watch session.

What piqued my interest to write this was when Ryoma wanted to create a laundry shop business. Pretty mundane right for a fantasy anime but it adds a certain charm to it.

Having to juggle life as an adventurer and budding entrepreneur, Ryoma seeks the help and guidance of the Merchant guild in looking for a space with good foot traffic and accessible to potential clientele and a couple of employees.

With the help of his trusty slimes and friends, Ryoma is able to quickly build his laundry shop and we are introduced to his first set of employees.

They are quick to judge him as he is an 11-year-old boy, unknown to them though that of course, this is a reincarnated middle-aged office worker that has experience in working for a company.

After seeing him surrounded by people that have high regard to him, they change their initial impression and agree to work with Ryoma in his laundry shop called Bamboo Forest.

Here we see how crappy working as an employee is in that fantasy medieval world.

Having gone back again with the Merchant Guild to get more employees we are greeted to a scene that the potential employees sees Ryoma and quick to judge him as not being a suitable employer and most people leave except for two.

Fei and his daughter Li Ling stay behind and had some dialogue with Ryoma who notices several things which the Merchant guild master confirms although honestly, I did not like what she said that she checks more thoroughly if they are foreigners.

Ryoma asks what their demands are in terms of wage and expectations and its sad that they were expecting just something that they could live by and to be able to find cheap accommodation.

Ryoma agrees to fair wages and even says they will be provided a dormitory. My heart broke when Li Ling was so happy with their rooms being clean and had furniture so definitely they were worst off when they working in the mines.

Afterwards Ryoma sees the value they bring in and further gives them a raise.

With business booming and the need for more people, Ryoma sets out to get more employees instead of saddling his people with more work. Also, he seeks to provide a chef to help prepare their meals.

Having given instructions on what to expect, the Merchant Guild Master was able to produce the right candidates who knew what they were getting into we are introduce to 3 more employees and a chef who will be part of Ryoma's expanding business.

In between these sessions of adding more employees is the constant fear of Ryoma that his business will be tagged as a Black Business. Further research provides context that a Black business or Black Company in Japan or as it is called burakku kigyō is stated as its specifics may vary from workplace to workplace and company to company, a typical practice at a black company is to hire a large number of young employees and then force them to work large amounts of overtime without overtime pay. Conditions are poor, and workers are subject to verbal abuse and "power harassment" (bullying) by their superiors. In order to make the employees stay, superiors of black companies would often threaten young employees with disrepute if they chose to quit.

That is such an awful environment to work in!

So having experienced that Ryoma strives to provide his employees with a myriad of good working conditions and benefits.

He is not above in doing the same work and pitching in as needed.

Realizing how hard each one was working he was afraid again of being branded as a black business when he thought he has not given anyone some time to rest and planned to either close the shop once a day or have each employee take turns in being off for a day or two.

Upon which some of the employees explained that it was so uncommon to do that and were already to have a life of servitude as they do not expect any days of rest, fair wages and already prepared themselves for sexual harassment.

Are you kidding me sexual harassment???!In this fantasy medieval world sexual harassment and power harassment is so common place that people do not bat an eye to it.

This realization of Ryoma gives the anime a bit of a shadow amidst its wholesomeness.

So Ryoma strove as an employer to provide the following:

  1. Fair wages and fair work hours
  2. To provide a safe working environment
  3. To not discriminate and provide equal opportunities to all regardless if foreigners, age, status or if human or monster
  4. To be able to increase manpower allocation instead of putting additional strain to the current workforce
  5. To provide accommodations and filling, delicious food as an employee benefit
  6. Provide healing and support as another great employee benefit
  7. To not tolerate sexual or power harassment
  8. To not be a black business (Exploitive business in Japan)
  9. To see the value of the individuals and reward appropriately
10, To provide days of rest (again because not wanting to be a black business!)

I find Ryoma as wanting to do good by his people and take care of them.

That added an extra layer of charm for the series for me and I am looking forward to Season 2 this year 2021!

Sort:

One of the most fun web novels you can find online, the anime kinda cut short some stuff but i guess is not easy to push so much wording into one single season, anyways i loved it as well, great employer, funny gods

Yeah I find it so wholesome and light when most mangas and light novels want that edginess and bloody scenes. I am looking forward to seeing more of it!
