Hoy les presento un anime con una propuesta bastante interesante. Como muchos sabrán —si siguen mis publicaciones desde hace años—, los animes sobre bandas musicales tienen algo que me atrae y me gusta, siendo Bocchi The Rock! el último gran exponente de este estilo. Triunfó semana tras semana sobre obras como Chainsaw Man, fue nominado a premios e incluso nombrado "anime del año" en algunos portales. Un éxito total en Japón, y no es para menos: tenía personajes memorables y una banda sonora excepcional.
En 2024, se estrenó un anime que podría considerarse similar, aunque generó opiniones divididas respecto a su animación, realizada completamente en 3D mediante CGI. Muchos decían que parecía un videojuego, pero yo —junto a muchos otros— puedo afirmar con firmeza que están equivocados. Simplemente, no estaban acostumbrados al estilo presentado, porque Toei Animation desplegó todo su arsenal para lograr un CGI muy expresivo. Aunque no agradó a todos, está muy bien ejecutado.
A pesar de no alcanzar el mismo éxito que Bocchi The Rock!, Girls Band Cry logró consolidar su propia base de fans gracias a su forma única de contar la historia y a sus excelentes canciones.
Así que, sin más preámbulos, comencemos con la reseña de este peculiar anime.
Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, ladies and gentlemen. How are you? How are you doing today? I hope you’re all well.
Today, I’d like to introduce you to an anime with a rather interesting premise. As many of you may know—if you’ve followed my posts over the years—I’ve always had a soft spot for anime about musical bands, with Bocchi The Rock! being the latest standout in this genre. Week after week, it outperformed even titles like Chainsaw Man, earned award nominations, and was even crowned "Anime of the Year" on some platforms. A massive success in Japan—and rightfully so, given its memorable characters and brilliant soundtrack.
In 2024, an anime with a somewhat similar vibe was released, though it sparked divided opinions over its animation, which was entirely 3D-rendered using CGI. Many claimed it looked like a video game, but I—along with plenty of others—can confidently say they’re mistaken. The criticism mostly came from a lack of familiarity with the style, as Toei Animation pulled out all the stops to deliver highly expressive CGI. While it wasn’t to everyone’s taste, the execution was undeniably impressive.
Though it didn’t reach the same heights as Bocchi The Rock!, Girls Band Cry managed to carve out its own fanbase thanks to its distinctive storytelling and outstanding music.
So, without further ado, let’s dive into the review of this intriguing anime.

El anime nos sitúa en la perspectiva de Nina, una chica de 17 años que abandonó la escuela debido al bullying que sufría y a problemas familiares. Ante esta situación, decide trasladarse a Tokio para forjar su propio camino en el mundo de la música, inspirada por su admiración hacia una banda llamada Diamond Dust, cuyas canciones solía escuchar en sus momentos difíciles como fuente de consuelo y motivación.
Vivir sola con apenas 17 años no será fácil. Además de estudiar para mantener el apoyo económico de sus padres, deberá encontrar tiempo para dedicarse a su carrera musical. Sin embargo, la vida de Nina dará un giro inesperado cuando conozca en persona a Momoka, la antigua vocalista de su banda favorita, quien parece haber perdido toda esperanza en la industria musical y se muestra resignada ante todo lo relacionado con la música.
Lejos de quedarse de brazos cruzados, Nina hará todo lo posible para convencer a Momoka de no abandonar Tokio y recuperar su pasión por la música, con el objetivo de formar una nueva banda junto a ella. Poco a poco se irán uniendo tres integrantes más (Subaru, Tomo y Rupa), dando así origen a Togenashi Togeari, el nombre que adoptará el grupo.
La historia nos mostrará el difícil camino de esta banda hacia el estrellato, incluyendo su enfrentamiento con la nueva formación de Diamond Dust (ya sin Momoka). Cada personaje deberá superar sus propios conflictos personales para que el grupo pueda alcanzar el éxito.
The anime places us in the shoes of Nina, a 17-year-old girl who left school due to bullying and family problems. Faced with these challenges, she decides to move to Tokyo to pursue her own path in the music world, inspired by her admiration for a band called Diamond Dust - whose songs she used to listen to during difficult times as a source of comfort and motivation.
Living alone at just 17 won't be easy. While studying to maintain her parents' financial support, she'll also need to find time to dedicate to her musical career. However, Nina's life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Momoka in person - the former lead singer of her favourite band, who appears to have lost all hope in the music industry and has become resigned to anything music-related.
Far from sitting idly by, Nina will do everything in her power to convince Momoka not to leave Tokyo and to rekindle her passion for music, with the aim of forming a new band together. Three more members (Subaru, Tomo and Rupa) will gradually join them, thus giving rise to Togenashi Togeari - the name the group will adopt.
The story follows the band's arduous journey to stardom, including their confrontation with the new lineup of Diamond Dust (now without Momoka). Each character must overcome their personal struggles for the group to achieve success.

Girls Band Cry destaca sobre todo por transmitir emociones al espectador a través de sus personajes, donde cada uno tiene algo que contar: sus problemas, sus traumas y sus luchas. En ningún momento se idealiza formar una banda; aquí se muestra el lado realista de la industria musical, con protagonistas que enfrentan dificultades económicas, disqueras que quieren alterar su esencia para ser más comerciales, el fracaso al lanzar sus primeras canciones como banda nueva, y otros desafíos. Nada es color de rosa en el camino de un grupo que busca mantenerse auténtico ante su público.
El anime prioriza, quizá un poco más, a Nina y Momoka, quienes definen la dinámica de la banda. Sus constantes confrontaciones, muchas veces impulsadas por los traumas de Nina, hacen que el personaje pueda resultar desesperante en ocasiones, pero profundamente humano. También están Subaru, que lucha contra su familia por seguir su propio camino en lugar del legado familiar; Tomo, cuyo perfeccionismo extremo aleja a quienes la rodean; y Rupa, quien desde pequeña tuvo que valerse por sí misma tras un accidente familiar, asumiendo un rol casi maternal.
Es raro encontrar en un anime personajes con problemas tan reales y bien desarrollados. Girls Band Cry sobresale por llevar estas historias crudas a la animación sin edulcorarlas.
Girls Band Cry stands out above all for conveying genuine emotions through its characters - each with their own story to tell: their problems, traumas and personal struggles. The series never romanticises being in a band; instead, it shows the harsh reality of the music industry. We see protagonists grappling with financial difficulties, record labels trying to alter their artistic identity for commercial appeal, the disappointment of failed single releases as a new band, and other authentic challenges. Nothing comes easily for a group trying to stay true to themselves while building an audience.
The anime gives slightly more focus to Nina and Momoka, who define the band's core dynamic. Their constant clashes - often fuelled by Nina's unresolved trauma - can make her character frustrating at times, but deeply human. The others are equally compelling: Subaru, fighting against family expectations to pursue her own path; Tomo, whose extreme perfectionism pushes people away; and Rupa, forced to grow up too quickly after a family tragedy left her fending for herself, adopting an almost maternal role.
It's rare to find anime characters with problems this raw and well-developed. Girls Band Cry excels precisely by bringing these unvarnished stories to animation without sugarcoating them.

Ahora, un punto importante: ¿el soundtrack es bueno? En efecto, mi estimado. Estamos ante una obra cargada de buenas canciones que no escatima recursos en las escenas donde estas se interpretan, con una expresividad abrumadora gracias al CGI y a la alta tasa de fotogramas utilizada. Las expresiones no podrían ser más reales, y me sorprende admitir que Toei Animation le haya dedicado tanto cariño a este anime.
Las canciones son, sobre todo, de rock —como en la mayoría de los animes de este estilo—, con letras que transmiten rebeldía ante las adversidades que enfrentan las protagonistas o contra el sistema en el que están inmersas. Lo más interesante es el contraste entre Togenashi Togeari y Diamond Dust: lo auténtico frente a lo comercial. Quizás el personaje de la exmejor amiga de Nina quedó un poco desperdiciado, pero espero que, si hay una segunda temporada, esto se resuelva, porque este anime lo merece.
Sin duda, les recomiendo darle una oportunidad. Solo es cuestión de acostumbrarse al estilo visual y encontrar una buena traducción, ya que en plataformas oficiales tuvo poca difusión —supongo que no le vieron futuro en esta parte del mundo—, por lo que toca recurrir a otros medios.
En mi sistema de puntuación subjetivo, le daría un sólido 8/10: una obra digna de verse, con problemas realistas sobre la industria musical y una animación experimental bien ejecutada.
Now, an important point: is the soundtrack any good? Absolutely, my good fellow. We're presented with a work packed full of excellent songs that doesn't hold back in performance scenes - delivering overwhelming expressiveness through its CGI and high frame rate animation. The facial expressions couldn't feel more authentic, and I'm genuinely surprised by how much care Toei Animation has poured into this anime.
The songs are predominantly rock - as with most anime of this genre - featuring lyrics that channel rebellion against the hardships the characters face or the system they're trapped within. The most compelling aspect is the Togenashi Togeari vs Diamond Dust dynamic: authenticity versus commercialism. Admittedly, Nina's former best friend feels slightly underutilised as a character, but should a second season materialise, I hope this gets addressed - this anime deserves that much.
Without question, I'd urge you to give it a chance. It simply requires adjusting to its visual style and tracking down a decent translation, as official platforms gave it surprisingly little coverage - presumably not seeing much potential in Western markets - leaving viewers to seek alternative means.
In my subjective scoring system, it earns a solid 8/10: a genuinely worthwhile watch offering realistic insights into the music industry paired with bold, experimental animation.
Normalmente no veo anime dedicado a la música a menudo aunque entre mis favoritos están k on y Nana pero realmente no son musicales, sin embargo el tráiler y tu reseña me fascinaron, los gráficos no son comunes pero me gusta y por eso lo agrego a mi infinita lista de animes para ver.
Yo podría decir que este es como K-On! pero con un tono más adulto, no todos los capítulos son canciones, jajaja. Espero le eches un ojo porque de verdad es interesante.

Ahorita estoy viendo otro con temática similar, seguramente también le haga un post de mis primeras impresiones, ya que cuenta con 7 capítulos apenas, está en emisión. Y sí, Girls Band Cry es bastante único, animación experimental y temas bastante serios, merece que más gente le dé una oportunidad.
