Two days ago, I came across a post while scrolling social media and found out that Gabi's birthday is coming up. Well, Gabi isn't on my list of favorite Attack on Titan characters but she looks cute and nice to draw. With how her character is and the irreversible act she did towards Sasha, I know most fans would just bat an eye on her birthday so I decided to give some love to the brat who killed Sasha by drawing a birthday fan art.
Happy Birthday, Gabi
I did this drawing yesterday on Gabi's birthday, April 14th, but I was already feeling too sleepy early evening to write and create a post about it. The image I had in my mind was a happy Gabi holding her birthday cake while her eyes are squinting happily. I also wanted to draw her smiling with an open mouth but I had difficulty drawing it from that angle and so I opted with only her teeth showing. On the other hand, I was able to draw the angle I had in my mind for this artwork.
The reason why I am drawing a happy Gabi while she receive a cake is that she has been hated and disliked by many. Both in the story and in the fandom of this anime, nobody forgets that night she climbed the escaping airship. Sasha is among my precious favorite characters since I've watched the first season in 2013 or 2014 but I honestly can't 100% put the hate on Gabi. Yes, I blame her but I understand why she did that. Imagine getting your hometown attacked and seeing the people and your friends getting killed, will you not fight back considering that you are a trained warrior? Are you not going to let them repay for the deaths of your friends? And on top of that, she was brainwashed by Marley's version of story where Eldians are devils moreso those who resided on the secluded island of Paradis.
Gabi Braun's biggest goal is to inherit Reiner's titan powers and to have her family granted the honorary Marleyan title. The situation she was in where their safety and future are uncertain made her into who she is. The self-centered brat and loyal Eldian warrior to Marley. Many fans have called her the female version of Eren and I would agree with that. Eren hates the titans while Gabi hates the Paradis devils, their only difference is that Gabi was able to somehow take revenge immediately when her hometown was attacked compared to Eren who was helpless and had to escape when Shiganshina was invaded by titans.
Ah, I know creating this drawing will provoke people and I was correct. Lol. When I posted this somewhere yesterday, people commented and expressed their hate for Gabi. I understand them and can't oppose them. It's their opinion and that's how they feel. But for me, I chose to let go of her mistake and move on. Among the good lessons I've learned from the fourth season of Attack on Titan was to cut the hate so it doesn't pass on to people and go on into the future. Sasha's parents are really good people and I think us humans here in the real world should emanate that moral too.
Drawing Process
After a few artworks I've done, I think I am slowly getting used to drawing this style of eyes. I feel like I am also slowly learning to the draw proper eyes angles which makes me feel happy. Before, I would really take a lot of time making a draft to get a decent angle but I can feel myself improving on that part right now though I know I still have a lot to learn.
I also think I could've reduced the shine on her hair or even removed it instead, well, that's something I have to experiment on in the future. I absolutely love glow effect but maybe it shouldn't be used all the time? Haha. I even applied it on the cake and it turned out looking weird.
I think this is my first time drawing a character that was widely hated. It was fun knowing what people feel towards her by their comments on my drawing.
To the brat who shot and killed Sasha, Happy Birthday.
(Funny how Eren chose to call Gabi that way, it's like he wanted to always remind people who killed his friend.)

I've seen so many memes about AOT and sadly I can't relate haha. I only saw season 1 back in 2013 and already forgot the other characters. Maybe when I'm not that occupied I can start watching it again. Cute colors btw!
