In the Wrong Hands...

In the wrong hands, life becomes death, which is another reason “Thou shalt not steal” is really there for our own protection.

The planet Rothato was known for two things: its jewel mines and what were thought to be its beautiful pens, used only by royalty – great swirling quills that seemed to create their own ink as they wrote, in the hands of their royal users.

So: the mines were the financial inspiration to conquer Rothato, and the great swirling quills were the status symbols to be desired – the new rulers fancied themselves using those pens.

What they had no way of knowing – because it was a secret that had lasted millennia – was that the genetic lineage of Rothaton royalty was the reason that they could use those great swirling quills and harness their power to create endless ink and many other things.

This was also why the Rothatons put up nothing but diversionary resistance before making a strategic retreat.

The new conquerors celebrated, sang their songs, made their reports, began stripping the planet's mines, and then of course went to the capital and the palace and found the the great swirling quills they supposed to just be pens, all left in the throne room. How convenient!

They sprang the trap, of course, picking up the quills, posing, and not noticing subtle changes until those quills looked likely like this.

The Rothatons had not even bothered to put out a distress signal when they were attacked, and, had they not needed fleet help to deal with all the ships suddenly dead in space, we never would have known anything about the matter.

Emphasis on dead in space.

The great quills were really vessels of a special kind of energy generated by the planet … rotational radiation of sorts would be the best way to understand it, although it was more complex.

Held by a hand of Rothaton origin, the energy could be made to generate matter; the royal lines had DNA that was most adapted to this energy, and so they did many things for the people based on their connection to that energy.

Held in any other hand in the galaxy, the quills changed form and released said energy in such a way that it would be like turning a tornado loose through one's molecules – the energy also imprinted the alien DNA and then sought and destroyed at long distances … even into and beyond orbit.

There was not an invader left alive in the Rothaton System in about ten minutes from when those who wanted to take over the planet had made it to that throne room.
