That must be so beautiful. Couldn't have payed me enough to have been an early explorer up there, though!

Me neither -- it was, indeed, the worst journey in the world, although there are some stunningly beautiful descriptions. The tale is from the viewpoint of those not chosen to go with Scott (thus, they survived) on the run to the pole.
