Otto Rapp - Beyond the surreal

DECALCOMANIA DIGITAL SELF PORTRAIT - 2019

I was pleasantly surprised the other day when my friend, gallery-owner/curator Yvette Endrijautzki, who runs the NAUTILUS STUDIO in Wuppertal, Germany contacted me with the final draft of this video below, which contains a interview done there at our exhibition of TRAUMTAFEL last year June 29th. I actually had forgotten, not the exhibition of course, because it was a huge success, but the interview I did slipped my mind. It is always strange to hear oneself talk. I guess it worked out OK - the editing of the video was superbly done.
We are all a bit more stuck on digital contacts since COVID-19 has us stuck at home.

Otto Rapp - Beyond the surreal

"Otto is a rare and exceptional artist and highly esteemed sibling of The Visionary Tribe. True to the veristic roots of his aesthetic, he is deserving of any and every means of support, patronage and the collection of his works"
Prof. Philip Rubinov Jacobson

As a Painter he was initially self taught, studying in the various Galleries and Museums. In Vienna, Otto was often ‘hanging out’ at the Akademie der Bildenden Kuenste, where he admired the work of the Wiener Schule des Phantastischen Realismus represented there by the Professors Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner and Arik Brauer. In Stockholm, Otto found out that he was washing dishes in the very same Restaurant where years earlier another Viennese Artist, Fritz Hundertwasser , the ‘Austrian Gaudi’ as he was later known as, had worked the same job. Encouraged by an art dealer in Gamla Stan, Otto began to paint more seriously.

The Nautilus Studio is a small, but very interesting gallery in Wuppertal with a great history, going back to Seattle, where I first met Yvette when I exhibited there in the Krabjab Studio in 2016 where at that time she was co-curator, but also the Nautilus Studio had its origins in Seattle.

Wow very fun to see you and the editing is very well done, love it!

Thank you Julia - yes, she did a great job. The software she used is Cut Pro X 101 on her Apple Computer.

It's beyond surrealism *3. lol.. I enjoyed watching the video. Wow! Your life story is pretty interesting. For some reason I thought you were originally from Canada and had moved to Vienna. I got it backwards!

That must have been a chore learning to speak English so well. I taught myself Spanish and lived in Mexico for a few years, but I am already forgetting how to say a lot of things since I haven't been there for so long.

Thanks Rick - you flatter me. Before I came to Canada, I lived in Sweden for almost 5 years. I learned Swedish so fluent that locals thought I was a Swede, albeit from some other corner of the country. But as fast as I learned it, I forgot, since once in Canada, no chance to practice. In fact, I had a hard time even with German those times I came home for visits. Only now, that I live again in Austria, but am in constant contact also with my English speaking friends, I am now fluently bi-lingual. I can still read most of Swedish, but speaking, or understanding spoken Swedish is a struggle. I might get back into it should I go there: initially it took me half a year to learn.

Fine introduction! I am also a painter who makes drawings... mostly because I hate the impotence of screen colours.

Thanks my friend - yes, that is the driving force for me now. While I doodle digitally sometimes, I am mostly unplugged, and drawing is the most immediate and quickest way. Fine painting, as I did in the past, is relatively rare now - I might paint a few canvases in such a labored way, but when I do work with paint, and have fun with it, is with Decalcomania. Two sides of the same coin. I don't have the patience anymore to slave over something for a month or longer.
