As he lay on the gurney, Leaf reflected, "Today is the day I change." For that matter, his entire existence would change. He also realized that things were about to change for the worse, not for the better. He needed to devise a strategy for getting out of the attic and away from the Slices. He wanted to make it through whatever they had in store for him. He had no one but himself to blame. He was reading the one house rule when he decided to break it. Who knows why he chose this path. He was curious as to why Sawn was there and where the Slices' two girls were.

Sawn finally gave in to Leaf's interrogation and enabled Mr. Slices to respond to the query about their two daughters. "Would you be so kind as to indulge Mr. Cole, Mr. Slices?" Sawn was the one who inquired.

Mr. Slices moved closer to Leaf so that he could hear him better. He cast a downward gaze, deep into Leaf's eyes. "My children, Rebecca and Rita, are not attending school in the usual sense, Mr. Cole." "What does that even mean?" Leaf objected. "That is the kind of talk and or behavior we will not accept," Sawn interrupted Mr. Slices before he could finish. "If you want an answer to your question, we, no, I must suggest that you refrain from using such language since it detracts from the atmosphere."

"Thank you, Sam," I say. Mr. Slices acknowledges Sawn's intervention in containing Leaf's outburst. "Thank you very much, Bryan." "Did you notice the two coffins, Mr. Leaf?" Bryan continues to move back and forth down the length of the gurney, lifting himself from Leaf's face. "Rita and Rebecca, my two daughters, are buried there." Leaf assumed the worst, but he didn't inquire as to how or why. He had no choice but to presume Bryan was responsible for their deaths. I'm not sure what else it might be. He was shackled on a gurney in the middle of what appeared to be a ritual. Well, hell's bells, Leaf thought, it seemed like a ceremony of some sort, and that's exactly what it was. "Dear brother, would you like to continue?" Bryan asks Sam. “Sure.” "Leaf, my child Bryan and I are brothers," says the narrator. I'm aware that we don't resemble each other.

As the kids say, we're brothers from different mothers." "We don't share a last name because our mothers' last name is different." "What in johnny apple seed does that have to do with why I'm on this gurney and why there are two dead females in caskets?" Leaf couldn't take it any longer. Mr. Slices was tickled by the johnny apple seed thing and burst out laughing. Sawn, on the other hand, didn't think it entertaining at all. "Oh, I meant to use more nice words, but I recall what occurred last time," Leaf stated when he noticed the divide between the two brothers. "I'd like someone to explain what's going on without having to go down memory lane." Leaf was ecstatic.

Sam and Bryan were brothers, Leaf couldn't believe it. He would never have put the two together because they didn't look anything alike. Sam was a tall, well-dressed man, whilst Bryan appeared to be a shorter version of Al Bundy. Both brothers shaved their heads. They didn't sound anything alike. They didn't walk in the same way. This contrast made Leaf ponder a lot of things, including how their father and mothers looked. Leaf instantly changed his mind and decided he didn't want to know the answer to that inquiry. It would be completely useless.

"Rita and Rebecca were both born with a rare condition," Bryan began, "that's all you need to know about that but," he paused. "Apart from that, Mr. Slices?" Leaf inquired. "It killed them at various stages of the disease and at various ages." Rebecca is the oldest and dies at the age of fifteen. Rita died when she was 14 years old." "Was there no treatment at all?" Leaf wondered. "Wouldn't they be here right now if there was a cure?" Mrs. Slices' quiet voice climbed the stairwell towards the attic. Leaf forgot he was tethered for a single second, and his heart skipped a beat. She was a stunning young lady. Bryan had no idea how he got her in the name of pig knuckles. "Did the physicians say there was no cure or was that your assumption?" Leaf asked himself.

"Mrs. Slices," Leaf responded. "I'm sorry for your loss, Ma'am," I say, "but what does it have to do with me?" "Well, Sam was gracious enough to locate you on this very day, my boy." You will be required to assist our girls in returning to this planet. They'll just need half of your heart. Rebecca requires the right, while Rita need the left." Leaf squirms around, exerting all of his effort to break free from his restraint. He was simply exhausted. "There's no need for it, my boy; please save your strength." Sam backed him up.

Leaf was perplexed, which exacerbated his nervousness. As you can see, son. "We'll cut your heart in half and put the right half in Rebecca's coffin and the left half in Rita's." Sam informed Leaf. “NO!!!!! As sweat ran down his cheeks, Leaf screamed at the top of his lungs. "You're not going to be able to do it." "I'm sure someone back home will miss me." "Mr. Sawn, someone is going to miss you as well." "No, no one will miss me because I'm returning home," says the narrator. Sam retorted. "New York is a big city; will you miss it?" Sawn, cocky as he was, inquired of Leaf. "You filth!" exclaims my relatives. Leaf screamed angrily.

Bryan retrieved a face towel and a bottle of chloroform from his cupboard. He dipped the towel in the chemical and wrung it out. He then turned around and approached Leaf. “Wait!!!! I can't let you do this," John shouted. "What are you going to do, son?" His mother had inquired. "Mother, please," John said as he turned to face her, "we can't do this."

"NO, Bryan, we've been waiting so long," she added. "All this time for what, to try to resurrect the dead?" "You've been so preoccupied with finding someone to open this dreadful attic door that you've forgotten you have a living boy who craves the love and care you've lavished on two dead daughters." Lucy Slices approached John and slapped him in the face. "You're not going to hurt Leaf," John regrouped and maintained his posture. "You need a man, but not him," she says. Bryan answered, "You know we can't use you; it has to be a non-relative."

"Bryan, John is correct," Sam said. "There's nothing we can do now because the girls are gone." "Leaf is just a nosy young man," says the narrator. "At work, he's nosy, and I knew he'd be the same here." He couldn't keep himself in check." "He's a terrific reporter because he's nosy." When Sam was done, he crossed the room and stood beside John. "I can't, we can't let you harm this young man by relying on a curse that might or might not be true." "The girl's misfortune is precisely that." "But injuring someone else isn't going to bring them back; we can't do it." It's time to devote yourself to the one child who is still alive." "He didn't leave, and he requires your assistance as well." "He'll always need you both more than the girls." With tears in his eyes, Sam continued. "Lucy Bryan, I think we should let him go."

Leaf can only recollect that time seemed to stop before either of them said anything.

Leaf had one too many drinks, and the worst part was mixing them with Chantix. He had been informed that it causes vivid dreams. He was attempting to quit smoking, and his doctor recommended this medication. As he awoke and wiped the sleep from his eyes, he thought to himself, "Man." He was well aware that he had a shot or two, three, or four of Tequila the night before, but he didn't dwell on it. He needed to go quickly this morning. He needed to get to work in under an hour and a half. He had no choice but to kick butt. It's a good thing he had half-packed his bag before leaving last night.

His Shelby Mustang took him to work in record time. He also had to thank the good weather, as well as the good traffic. When he arrived at the office, Mr. Sawn was waiting for him with a ticket, hotel reservations, and camera equipment. Mr. Bernard and Lauren Slices greeted Leaf when he arrived at 7124 Maple Wood Cove in Believe, PA.
