“So, Dad, Goldie just brought us some more meat and I wanted to know if you would throw it up on the barbie for her.”

Sgt. Vincent Trent resisted both laughing and crying as he looked down at eight-year-old Gracie and her big golden cat, Goldie, who was single-handedly keeping the field mouse population in check and had brought her latest catch to Gracie.

“Tell Goldie I need a day in advance, because there's an order to barbecuing, and everyone has a best diet,” the sergeant said. “I'm just finished barbecuing the tofu and halloumi cheese, and I had to clean the grill to make sure there wasn't meat contamination for Amanda and George's diets – so now, I'd have to clean the grill again to make sure Goldie's carnivore diet wasn't contaminated with tofu and halloumi cheese, and I don't have time.”

“You know what, Dad, that makes perfect sense, because there's this story called Ward Wegler and the Bicycle of Doom and when you do stuff out of order and don't get things done for others on time and then try to take shortcuts, you can get off into dimensions and stuff that you really don't want to get to.”

“I'm glad it all makes sense – good book?” Sgt. Trent said.

“Yep – Ward ends up all right even though that bike is still out there waiting to teach lessons to the next one – Goldie and I are OK with that not being you or us.”

“I'm so glad, Gracie – we gotta be safe out here,” Sgt. Trent said.

“Ain't it the truth – come on, Goldie, we'll just give this one back to the field for nature to do its thing, and then you gotta remember to catch one the day before Dad barbecues next time.”
