Ever have that neck-breaking level of de ja vu?

Capt. R.E. Ludlow and his wife Thalia did a double take, an hour and a half after their blond-headed youngest grandsons Robert (5) and Grayson (6) had decided to dump onion-skin burgundy and blueberry blue dye on their heads to make orange for one's hair and green for the other's.

Youngest granddaughters Amanda (7) and Edwina (8) had gotten the dye all over themselves by “helping” their brothers work the dye in, in hopes of getting the right color.

Capt. Ludlow had spent an hour in the garage shower, getting all that dye out of everything and everyone … only to see grandsons Robert and Grayson return just thirty minutes later with orange and green hair, just like they wanted it!

“So, while we were waiting for our turn in the shower, Milton Trent [9] came out on his back porch and we told him what we were trying to do,” Grayson said with a huge grin.

“Milton is so smart!” Robert said.

“He said to use chalk, like they do in the movies!” Edwina said. “It works for long, straight white kinda hair like ours and just as well for long but all curled to the max black kinda hair like his too!”

“He's so nice,” Amanda said. “He brought us the right color chalk and did a whole demonstration on himself and Gracie [8] so that when we got out of the shower, we were able to fix Robert and Grayson right up!”

Capt. Ludlow looked through the front window, and Milton with lavender hair and Gracie with the colors of the rainbow waved back.

“And the best part about chalk is that it gets all over everything like dye, but it's just dust, so, you can take your clothes off and beat it out of them, and then just wash your hands!” Edwina said.

“No extra mess for the hairdressers!” Amanda said.

“Don't we look handsome?” Robert said.

“We know you have that big business meeting coming up, Grandpa, and with your hair already being white, we can fix you right up with whatever color you want!” Edwina said.

At about this time, Sgt. Vincent Trent came out on his porch, looking at his grinning little ones in complete bewilderment.

Capt. Ludlow came out with a smile.

“Sergeant, do you ever have insane thoughts sometimes, like, we would have been safer and saner if we had just stayed in the military?”

“I suppose all veterans do,” Sgt. Trent said, “and, yeah, me too.”

Mrs. Ludlow came out with a smile.

“Congratulations, gentlemen,” she said. “Welcome to the world of your wives, always just a magic trapdoor away from the world of childhood.”

“Yeah, and this is why I'm getting re-marrried,” Sgt. Trent said.

“And why I will NEVER be getting divorced,” Capt. Ludlow said, as all ten little ones took their heads of households' declarations as reasons to celebrate and dance around with all the colors of their heads.
