5 Minute Freewrite: Thursday - Prompt: unnecessary

in Freewriters • 2 years ago

This is my entry to the freewrite prompt. I present you two versions, first edited version, then the unedited. After reading you will understand why. 😉

Edited Version:

Today's freewrite prompt is the word unnecessary. So how about an unnecessary introduction to what is happening right now?

The 5 minute challenge means to open an editor (or maybe even grab pen and paper if you prefer) and just start typing or writing for five minutes with the prompt (in this case: unnecessary) in mind.

No need for thinking, in fact it is discouraged.

That poses a particular challenge to me, because English is not my native language. Even though I started learning it some twenty years ago i still have a lot of problems with spelling and grammar.

But when I post on Hive I do not write in German first and then translate it to English. I write in English directly and force myself to think in English while doing so.

So the question in my mind: Is there such a thing as unnecessary?

Especially for writers I do not think there is anything unnecessary. Even the stuff we edit out in the end did not seem unnecessary at the time of writing.

And after the cut it still leaves its traces in what is still there.
Maybe we change things, maybe we replace them. Even after cutting it out without any replacement, at the time of writing it served as a bridge for the writer to get to the point. It was at some point a thought in our head that needed to be expressed and necessary to get to the next step.

Anyway, my five minutes are up.

As a conclusion: for the process of writing there is no such thing as unnecessary (in my humble opinion).

Uneditet Version

Todays freewrite prompt is the word unnecessary. So how about an unnecessary introduction to what is happening right now?

that seems like a nice point to switch back to topic (or prompt) which was "unnecessary".

Some good points raised when doing any creative type of work really. The stuff that gets left on the cutting room floor is often essential to the finished product. Even if nobody sees it in the end.
