"99 Luft Balloons!!!"
"Except we are going to add another digit and make it 999!!"
"Why Di, why? The amount of plastic that you are releasing into the world. Think of that!!"
"It would be the funnest!! And imagine our song, Nena's 99 luft balloons playing loud. It would be great."
"It would be foolish. Apart from polluting Gaia, you are probably going to get scared when the balloons pop."
"OMG!! Sid, you are brilliant!! Yes, yes. We need glitter in these balloons and when they pop, the magic will fill the air."
"Di, are you even listening to me? No! No balloons, No loud music. No glitter, it's terrible for the environment. And Lily will have a fit. All that cleaning up to do after."
"Oh, Sid! You need to loosen and learn to love life. Let loose. Celebrate."
"Yes, but not like this. Get over this crazy idea."
Di started walking away. Sid caught up after counting to 10. Usually, she'd play along knowing that half the things Di planned were really just having fun imagining the what-ifs. Di was the queen of grand ideas, and Sid was the official wet blanket. They got along like a house on fire.
Sid remembered the day they had met. It was on a cold, breezy afternoon. The skies were grey, and her mood matched it. She was sitting under an apple tree, counting apples. She could hear her friends goofing around except they were only kinda friends. She exasperated them. She always said uncool things. People didn't want a nay-sayer hanging out with them. But she couldn't help being the voice of reason.
As she lay there counting the apples after shooing off her "friends" who wanted to just throw stones at the apples to see who could knock off the most. Not that they wanted to eat them, just for the heck of it. A game but she wasn't having any of that. It wasn't easy stopping them, but she did.
And this is when Di plonked herself beside her. Di was Adam's younger sister. And he had to babysit her that day. She was only 1 year younger than them, but Di was special, or so Adam said. She plonked herself on the ground and started counting the apples aloud.
"What are you doing?" Sid asked her, though the question should have been, "why?"
"I'm helping you count the apples. Isn't that what you are doing?"
And that's how the friendship started. They enjoyed spending time with each other, and it became a win-win-win. Adam was more than happy to "babysit" his sister. Di was happy to hang out with Sid, the feeling mutual and Adam got some brownie points from his parents.
But today, Di was just taking it a bit too far, and she just wouldn't stop. As she ran after Di who started walking faster and faster breaking into a run, they came around the corner even as Sid caught up. And there was Adam and the bunch, holding a huge poster with red balloons drawn all over it. And in glitter, it read "You are my best friend Sid!! Happy Friendship Day!!"
Di turned around and gave Sid the biggest hug. As Di tried to hold back the tears because she just hated crying, Sid gave Adam and the rest a hug too.
"You are also my best friend guys, and yes! Even you Adam. But Sid is my bestest. Thank you for helping me with the 999 balloons here. Sid and I are going to count them now, to make sure there are 999. Sid, come. Let's count the balloons!! Wait, let me play 99 Luft Balloons. I brought a Bluetooth speaker too. Come on!!"
This is for my freewrite today. OMG!! I can't believe it is the 999th prompt. I remember starting my freewrites with @MarianneWest around the 200th prompt. I hear there's going to be something fun at the at FreeWriteHouse. This is really quite amazing. You are amazing Marianne :D
