The Kecak Dance was fascinating to watch. Of course, Tony insisted they sit in the front row and what happens when you sit in the front row? You get called out. She shook her head vigorously, pushing Tony to go but it looked like he had planned this.
The dancer refused to step away without her. It wasn't like she was scared of him, just maybe a little grossed out. Bare-chested, sweating from dancing over the fire, the feathers in his head-gear didn't help either. Her friends found her obsession with cleanliness overbearing and after a few subtle altercations, stopped bringing their kids over. Not that she minded. Dropping their cookie crumbs all over her carpet with mothers thinking "it's not a big deal, I'll clean it up", was a great offset to the gatherings at her place.
With already too much attention on her by now, she got up gingerly and let Tony's hand go. He gave her hand a squeeze mouthing 'go - learn the dance". By now she was really angry with him, with the Kecak dancers, with everything. The rest of the dancers and "volunteers" were already slowly stamping their feet to the rhythm. The rest was a blur.
Tony's face came into focus. She was back in the hotel room, in bed. She still had the clothes she wore out on.
"Oi, you gave us quite a scare. Was it real, or were you pulling a fast one to get out of it? A bit over right?"
She rubbed her eyes and rolled out of bed and started beating the sheets.
"Tony, why would you put me in the bed? That's just gross. Can you call housekeeping to change the sheets? I need to take a shower."
"So, what happened? You stole the show - overachiever much?"
She wasn't in the mood for jokes. Showers always helped her wind down and clear her head. Her biggest presentations and ideas unfolded in the shower. She didn't care for baths. Lying in the water that got filthier by the second wasn't her idea of relaxing. More the jet spray hitting her back, that was her ideal.
As the steaming hot water beat down her back, not as hard as she'd like it - she tried to remember the blank space. She was angry, she tried to follow the steps, she felt a surge of energy simultaneously her muscles relaxed and then she was waking up in her bed, angry again. The last time blank space happened was in secondary school when they played that stupid truth or dare game. But at least that Kecak experience was the inspiration to one of her most successful campaigns.
"Aunty Umnya" that snapped her out of her memories. Lee Lee's 3-year-old pointing at her, knocking the screen with a giant plastic magic wand. Lee Lee was looking at her, grinning like a monkey.
"Did you hear that Amala? She said your name." Then she turned to her little one, "now say good night to Aunty Amala" But the Lil one wiggled to get off her mother's lap and knocked the screen several times with the play wand in the struggle. It was the longest 30 seconds, with Lee Lee trying to get the wiggly wormed child to say goodnight.
Finally, she said "aight Umnya" and then more struggling as Lee Lee tried getting her to say "aunty" and at the end of that little scene, 6 faces were looking at her from her screen. Lee Lee minus wiggly child, Bindi, Mariam, Livvy, Selma, Dolly.
