Demon of Man

I gamble my life away,
betting everything
on love.

There's just enough space
between my life
and oblivion
for you.

As overcast days
try to dim your light,
that space widens—
daily.

Our oasis.

Fate shuffled our decks together,
and now we play
the hands we were dealt—
side by side.

I never fold.
But even if I did,
you’d be worth
utter bankruptcy—
for total ruin is grace
when nothing can take you away—
the untouchable token
that became my meaning.

Tell me—
is it too much to ask—
to be the first and the last
to take me, heal me,
and truly see
I am not
the demon of man?
