Humility is a virtue, in which we accept our abilities without boasting about them or humiliate our fellow men, we also accept our defects, Cervantes said that it was the basis and foundation of all virtues.
Unfortunately, and as a way of demonizing it, this word has also been attached to the fact of not possessing material wealth and pointing to these as of low human quality.
We are then faced with the social duality of not wanting to be humble for not being compared with ungrateful people and the struggle of extolling the ego and giving way to pride.
In the Bible the phrase "Blessed are the humble for they shall inherit the earth" is attributed to Jesus and in many versions this word is changed to poor in spirit, without even imagining that the word poor has nothing to do with the definition.
People obtain material goods, bask in the sweetness of success in their professions and businesses, enjoy the comfort that money provides and cross the line set by society that disconnects them from their roots and those who have not achieved the same goal, looking down like fierce guardians who have no heart.
To be humble is to connect us with our human condition, to understand that everything that is obtained in the short journey through life is ephemeral and even if we try we will not have time to enjoy it, besides we are not islands in the middle of the ocean and we need that helping hand that could ease our burdens, that wisdom that in most cases is not found in this world of arrogant and egomaniacs.
Some time ago I read a phrase that says "Don't step on those below you when you go up, they will be the same ones you will find when you come down" and it is a reality for a great number of people who end up imprisoned in that back and forth that money provides.
It costs nothing to deal harmoniously with others, to share some of what we obtain, to teach what we learn, to embrace those who need it and to be the necessary person for the helpless. We cannot lose our human condition by believing we are better because there is no such human classification, we are all equal in the eyes of the Lord.
