-A ver déjame verlo-

-A ver, déjame ver-

-No mientas Antonio, a ver vamos a ver-

-No creo, huele a otra cosa-

Camila watched one of her brothers leaf through one of her uncle Aurelio’s books, she was the oldest of five siblings, barely a year apart from one to the other. She was about to finish high school and had not yet decided what to study next, but she always talked about her interest in psychology or one of the behavioral sciences, so she was very interested in the way of thinking and being of the others, especially his brothers who constantly got into trouble.

-What are you reading Antonio? -

-This strange book that I found on my uncle Aurelio’s desk, seems to be about gardening, agriculture or something like that, because it has many notes on the shape of the leaves and stems of plants that I had never seen-

Antonio was a very curious teenager, a fan of everything that had to do with nature, from the age of ten he had learned to make grafts of orange, lemon, lime, apple and pear thanks to his grandfather who saw in him great potential since he was very young.

-Let me see it-

Indeed, it was a very old book, with the characteristic smell of books that have been forgotten at the back of a library, but this had something special that caught Camila’s attention, it had no author’s name or editorial information, in addition to which lacked a prologue, it looked more like a series of notes bound in the old fashioned way, but as Camila advanced between the pages, she found what looked like handwritten notes in an unknown language

-There’s something written here that I don’t understand Toño-

-Let me see-

-They are not notes, rather they look like blows or marks with a knife, they look like the ones on Uncle Aurelio’s parchment-

-Which parchment? -

-One that he has hidden in the secret drawer under his desk-

-Wait, they already told you that you cannot enter the uncle’s office without his permission. Also, how are you supposed to get in without a key, did you pick the lock?

-I didn’t force it, it was open, I realized because it was getting cold

-Don’t lie Antonio, let’s see-

The two brothers headed to their uncle’s office. In fact, the door was open, Camila had not entered that part of the house for a long time, the bookshelves were arranged differently, there were many more books than before, a large number of which were on the floor, but there was one that called the attention of Camila, Behavioral Engineering. Her curiosity was stronger than his prudence, she took it in her hands and began to read it.

In that Francisco and Alberto arrived and joined the reading. Francisco went directly to the martial arts books as expected, at sixteen he was the youngest to have obtained the black belt, after having lived a primary victim of bullies, he did not miss the opportunity to learn new techniques. Alberto, on the other hand, liked mathematics almost as if it were an art, he often said that this science was the easiest to learn, he immediately went to his favorite area.

A while later Carmen arrived, and when she saw her brothers in her uncle’s library, she went to look for some books on wildlife and animal husbandry. The five siblings were very calm until Carmen noticed a scent that drew her concentration.

-What does it smell like?-

“It’s the smell of old books,” Camila replied.

-I don’t think so, it smells like something else-

-Wait, there is something here that I want all of you to see, Camila commented-

She then showed them a piece of newspaper in which their names were written along with the disciplines of their choice.

Camila. Behavior, psychology.
Antonio. Botany.
Francisco. Martial Arts.
Alberto. Math.
Carmen. Animals, zootechnics.

-Does it not seem strange to you that Uncle Aurelio has this list precisely as a separator in a book on behavioral engineering? -

“Are you suggesting that the uncle decided what each of us would like? Those are just notes of what is easy to observe,” Alberto commented.

“That would be the most logical thing, unless the newspaper is thirty years old when none of us were born yet,” Camila added.

-Well, the fact that it is written in that newspaper does not imply that it was written on the day of its publication, does it not? - Alberto insisted

“Seriously, it smells like something weird,” Carmen interrupted.

She immediately left the book on the others and went to follow the trail of that strange smell, she crossed the room and went through the kitchen door until she reached her uncle’s bedroom that was on the other side of the garden.

-Haaa!! -

Quickly the others came out to see what was happening, Carmen was at the entrance of the room, inside Uncle Aurelio was on the floor in a pool of blood...
