What Did You Learn About the Soviet Union in School?

in Quello4 years ago (edited)

Our teachers in Canada never mentioned any good aspects of the Soviet Union. Although I am not a communist/socialist, it is interesting that our schools never taught us the positives of the Soviet Union. Basically we mostly learned about WW2, Cold War, gulags and Joseph Stalin killing millions of people. We didn't learn about the everyday life of many Russians and how a lot of them lived normal lives. It was made out to be the awful dystopian place. Do you think this was due to ignorance of the teachers and school system or were they purposely omitting positive aspects of the Soviet Union?

How about you?

Many European countries were much better off under Soviet rule. Mandova was once a great country now they are in danger of collapse. But you could say the same for Nazis as well. The most evil regime to ever exist (sarcasm), but thats what we are taught. What will they teach about USA in 100 years I wonder.

Really interesting. We obviously learned many bad aspects of Nazi Germany but we did learn that Hitler was successful in redeeming Germany (and their pride) after being devastated by the first world war. For that reason, perhaps many Germans are still loyal to Hitler. I'm amazed at how Germany could lose two world wars in their own country and still build up to become a successful and prosperous powerhouse of a country. That always impressed me.

However, why are you sarcastic about Nazis being the most evil regime? Indeed Mao and Stalin were worse in terms of the death toll, but were there other good aspects of Nazi Germany?
