Twenty Years of Hypnotic "Therapy"

in HypnoChain3 years ago (edited)

After this post I guess the next time I'll get to a hypnotherapist conspiring with a subject's partner will be a post about the Shake It Up episode in which CeCe gets Rocky hypnotized. I am not sure when that will be because there's no firm queue I am following.

Anyway, American Dad! is today's exhibit. Wife gets hypnotized but isn't turned into a Stepford wife. Well, kind of made Stepford. By the seventh season it had already been established that Francine had a certain amount of independence that couldn't have been retconned.

It's revealed in the "White Rice" episode that Francine's (voiced by Wendy Schaal) husband Stan (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) had been taking her to a hypnotist (voiced by Jason Alexander) annually for the previous twenty years. Each year Francine and Stan would have the same argument. Francine would go to a neighbors' pool to cool down from the argument. The neighbors (voiced by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker) tried each time to remind Francine that she had been doing that every year but she couldn't remember having done that before. Stan would show up and offer to go to see a therapist with her to help straighten out their relationship.

At the "therapist's" office Francine was hypnotized without her informed consent. While Francine was in her hypnotized state Stan would hand a list of things from the previous year that the "therapist" needed to repress in Francine's memories. Stan would leave to get a sandwich and ignored the "therapist" as he requested that Stan also bring back a sandwich for him. Stan would take his unconscious wife home so she would wake up in bed unaware of everything that had transpired.

That's the way it went year after year. Until one day the hypnotist was fed up about never getting fed a sandwich. As Stan returned to the office the hypnotist commanded Francine to recall everything that had been repressed in her memories by the hypnotist over the previous two decades.

The takeaway from this is to always be courteous to your wife's hypnotist. While we're on the subject don't mess with the nerd in tech support. In general don't push the paid talent you depend on over the edge. You'll regret it.
