Candid Journal Entry #14: The Home Front

in STEMGeeks4 years ago

A few weeks ago, I mentioned about checking out the COVID-19 stats again after May. Here we are, the beginning of June. Let's go back and see what Utah's state website offers.

Of course, the numbers can only go up. The good news is, the percentages of mortality, etc. still remain around the same level. There is a concern, though, when we look at the epidemic curve. Then again, it should come as no surprise as people go about their business.

The hospitals have been preparing for a second wave as a precaution. Now, with the riots that have been going on, I can only imagine it'd get worse. There is something tragic and yet ironic with the turn of events. It would be unfortunate that the second wave was due to artificial means.

The riots themselves, though, would be discussion for another day. They effected some of the healthcare operations. But as far as I know, the curfew no longer applies as of this morning.

Health professionals would advise you to stay at home. After further investigation, it would seem that spring cleaning is in order. That is, if you have been putting it off during the outbreak.

The chart above may surprise some people. Although, when you stop and think about it, it makes sense. Healthcare settings are lower because they operate with patients. Above all, everyone has personal protection equipment. Even workplaces would be less dangerous if employers took any measures at all.

Now, when it comes to our homes, that is a different story. Many of us are most likely complacent about the cleanliness and hygiene of our dwellings. Things could fester and later become the eventual source of health problems. Even at my work, the staff has instructions on how to unwind after working at clinical settings. So yes, cleanliness is a factor.

Other nitty gritty details may include mask wearing habits. It's somewhat pointless for someone to go out with masks while letting their kids go without. Yeah, the incidents in children is low, but that doesn't mean they can't be carriers. It seems counterproductive to let them go collect germs and bring them home.

The point being, your conduct at home may have an impact on how you mitigate risks and exposures. So, clean yourselves up after you go home.

Sort:

My biggest issue is the fact that I forget to take a mask with me. I really need about twenty of them so I can just keep one about every place I might ever go. I was halfway to town the other day to stop into two stores and realized I didn't have a mask. I feel like a schmuck when I have to go in without one now. It is funny how that perception has changed in the past two months.

Yeah, putting some in places like your car may not be a bad move.

Great advice and a lot of common sense! Unfortunately, many people do not possess that...

Yesterday, we went out. I would say 1 person out of 2 wears a mask. Many do not give shit about distances... I can already feel a second wave coming in 2-3 weeks if nothing changes quickly...

It bothers me that things are gonna pick up again not due to a change in virulence, but people preferring to take risks.

Bloody humans... :D

We just can't win. lol

A sensible article. Basic common sense here:

It's somewhat pointless for someone to go out with masks while letting their kids go without
workplaces would be less dangerous if employers took any measures at all.

The household exposure is comparable to what Gov. Cuomo has reported in New York, and he comes to the same conclusion--those on the front line are taking measures, and those measures work--despite increased exposure. So why the resistance in this country to masks? Crazy. Masks have become a political football.

Lack of personal accountability and sense of responsibilities I guess.
