Turning Explosions Into Thrust

in STEMGeeks3 years ago

It would be amazing to have an engine that allows us to fly at Mach 17 and can reach the orbit directly from the ground. This may be true as the successful and explosive test of an experimental shock-ramjet engine opens the door to engines that tame explosions and turn them into thrust.

I fail to understand how chemical explosions can give more trust than a conventional chemical rocket.

At the other hand, nuclear pulse propulsion - propelling a spaceship through nuclear bombs - may make sense since we so far haven't found a way to "tame" the fusion process.

Nuclear pulse propulsion is certainly interesting, but it would face the same problems nuclear energy itself faces - it sounds scary and honestly would only be useful once in space for the most part because of it.

Indeed. The concept of lifting up a megasized rocket directly from earth could work out in the 50s or 60s, but not today. Anyway, if we are to scale out space travels, I think we need to think beyond chemical rockets (explosive or conventional).

Interestingly, it's a rather old idea. From the wikipedia article on nuclear pulse propulsion:

The idea of rocket propulsion by combustion of explosive substance was first proposed by Russian explosives expert Nikolai Kibalchich in 1881, and in 1891 similar ideas were developed independently by German engineer Hermann Ganswindt.
