Why the universe is most likely not infinite – Part 2: Scientific question or not?

Im ersten Teil haben wir definiert, was man unter einem unendlichen Universum versteht. Meistens wird der Raum-Dimension aber auch manchmal der Zeit-Dimension Unendlichkeit zugeschrieben.

Die Konsequenz einer unendlichen Raum-Dimension ist ein unendlich großer Raum mit unendlich vielen Sternen, Planeten, Galaxien etc., wenn man annimmt, dass das Universum homogen und isotropisch ist, d.h. in allen Richtungen ähnlich aussieht und strukturiert ist, was zumindest für das sichtbare Universum und der kosmischen Hintergrundstrahlung (CMB) der Fall ist.

Teil 2: Wissenschaftliche Frage oder nicht?

Die Frage ist jetzt, ob sich das Universum hinter der kosmischen Hintergrundstrahlung unendlich weiter ausstreckt oder nicht.

Wie ihr sehen könnt, bewegen wir uns bei dieser Frage bereits auf sehr dünnem Eis, da wir eine Aussage über etwas machen wollen, dass sich außerhalb des prinzipiell Messbaren befindet.

Vielleicht liegt die Frage sogar außerhalb des Erkenntnishorizonts und kann nie definitiv beantwortet werden.

Erkenntnisgewinn funktioniert in der Wissenschaft vereinfacht wie folgt: Man beobachtet etwas, stellt ein Modell (eine Vereinfachung der Wirklichkeit) auf, um (sinnvolle) Prognosen über die Realität machen zu können und belegt oder falsifiziert das Modell dann experimentell.

Zum Beispiel ermöglicht die Newtonsche Mechanik vorherzusagen, in welchem Winkel und mit wieviel Kraft ein Pfeil abgeschossen werden muss, um einen Gegner auf dem Schlachtfeld zu treffen.

Die Aussagen der Newtonschen Mechanik können also experimentell überprüft werden.

Macht man allerdings Aussagen, die aus Prinzip nicht experimentell belegbar oder falsifizierbar sind, verlässt man sehr schnell die Wissenschaft und macht im besten Fall eine interessante Spekulation und im schlimmsten Fall sitzt man einem dummen Irrglauben auf.

Was denkt ihr, ist die Unendlichkeits-Frage noch wissenschaftlich beantwortbar oder willkürliche Spekulation? Denkt ihr, dass das Universum endlich oder unendlich ist?

In den kommenden Teilen erfährt ihr, warum man trotzdem Aussagen über die (Un)endlichkeit des Universums machen kann, ohne den Boden der Wissenschaft zu verlassen.



In the first part we defined what is meant by an infinite universe. Mostly the space dimension but also sometimes the time dimension is attributed infinity.

The consequence of an infinite space dimension is an infinitely large space with an infinite number of stars, planets, galaxies, etc., if one assumes that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic, i.e., looks similarly and is structured similarly in all directions, which is the case at least for the visible universe and the cosmic microwave background (CMB).

Part 2: Scientific question or not?

The question now is whether or not the universe extends infinitely beyond the cosmic background radiation.

As you can see, we are already on very thin ice with this question, since we want to make a statement about something that is outside of what can be measured in principle.

Maybe the question is even outside our knowledge horizon and can never be answered definitely.

Gaining knowledge in science works simplified as follows: One observes something, sets up a model (a simplification of reality) in order to be able to make (reasonable) predictions about reality, and then proves or falsifies the model experimentally.

For example, Newtonian mechanics allows one to predict at what angle and with how much force an arrow must be shot to hit an opponent on the battlefield.

The statements of Newtonian mechanics can therefore be verified experimentally.

However, if you make statements that are not experimentally verifiable or falsifiable on principle, you very quickly leave science and in the best case you make an interesting speculation and in the worst case you are sitting on a stupid misbelief.

If the universe extends infinitely. What does it extend over? And over what it extends is also infinite? My head hurts now.

haha, true, therefore I'm not a big fan of infinity. Raises even more questions than a finite universe in my opinion.

I think the question is just speculation. We just don't have enough information or the tools to get that information right now.

This has opened my eyes to a lot of things

In our lifetime we won't ever really know the answer. The human race may figure it out one day but far, far into the future. There is so much we don't understand and we may not understand the questions we should be asking as of yet. As a human I would guess finite but that comes from our mindset that everything is finite. Could it possibly be infinite, yes... It would be nice to know wouldn't it?

The infinite concept is a very human concept. I can be thinking about this concept infinitely.

I rather doubt the infinity, although I don't have any grounds in which I doubt it on😂.
It's rather easy for humans to simply believe in something based on the romanticism of that thing.

The infinity of the universe is something that has been used in stories, logs and books when it is potentially incorrect.
People tend to believe in such things due to how cool or fascinating it sounds and nothing is more fascinating than being in a space without an end, emphasizing on how small and irrelevant we are in such a big space.

The universe is drastically large and bastardly enormous yes...
Infinite? Maybe...(personal feeling: No)
