Hello to all friends of Hive! Here I am back to talk about the last trip I made. I took a few days off to celebrate my birthday, but now I am ready to leave with you in the visit of the wonders of Palazzo Te in Mantua.

A bit of history

The palace takes its name from a small island called Tejeto and was shortened with the word Te. The palace is actually a villa of the early sixteenth century, full Renaissance, built in an area outside the city of Mantua.
It’s the work of the architect Giulio Romano for the Gonzaga family, ancient masters of the city.
It is surrounded by a huge park, the building has a square plan with a double courtyard in the center and with a hemicycle that closes it in its final part.
The architect certainly took inspiration from the ancient classical buildings for the construction of this imposing villa, which was clearly a symbol of beauty and represents the importance of the masters of the time.

Some details

The columns are unit blocks of great size, all the ceilings are decorated with frescoes or wooden elements, the accuracy in detail is something absolutely remarkable.

The Hall of Love and Psyche

It is the room with the most precious decorations in the details and in the richness of the colors of the entire building, on the walls you can see narrated the story of Love and Psyche of Apuleius.
An inscription on the walls recalls the main function of the villa, "ocio post labores", idleness after work, and that was the main intent. Even this room, most likely for dining, was able to reconcile beauty to rest.

The Hall of the Horses

This is located next to the Hall of Love and Psyche and was intended for the party, it was a ballroom that was called horses because the Duke wanted frescoed his six favorite horses. Then looking up, on the walls, you can see life-size portraits of the horses of the Gonzaga.

The Hall of the Giants

Main attraction of Te Palace, and I am sincere in saying that I was waiting to see this room, and that for me it was similar to Stendhal syndrome! This room is really fascinating, the theme is that of the Fall of the Giants and is made with fantastic precision.

This is what Giorgio Vasari in his famous work "The lives of the most excellent painters, sculptors and architects", where he collects and comments on some of the most famous Italian works and artists, wrote about this room :

“Let no one think that he will ever see a more horrible and frightening work of brush, nor more natural than this one. And whoever enters that room, cannot help but fear that everything will not fall on him … they were the large giants, who fell to the ground by lightning and lightning struck … “.

The room is presented with a square base, with a floor with circular decoration and a domed ceiling, the illusion generated by this type of architecture seems to suck every spectator inside the vortex that arose from the battle of the giants with Zeus for the conquest of Olympus and their ruinous fall.
This episode is also taken from classical Greek literature, it is in fact part of the Gigantomachia narrated by Ovidio.

Also you can see numerous graffiti with signatures, because once visitors used to sign the places of art to mark their passage, as to say " I was here "! Now of course it is not possible as it should be!

The Lodge of Honour

It is the part of the villa that overlooks the pools with fish and opens onto the large garden.

The apartment of the Secret Garden

This area was built in the most extreme east of the villa, is also called apartment of the cave, because inside it resembles a cave, and its main use was that of bathroom. A little unusual as environment but perhaps it had to bring back to our origins more ancient and natural even if the materials used are of helix as shells and precious marbles.
It’s preceded by a well-decorated loggia and a small garden.
