Here we are finally, the last chapter of this journey to ancient Campania, in this last article of my blog, I would like to tell you about Villa Poppea in Oplontis (now Torre Annunziata) and the archaeological museum of Naples, which contains many finds from the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii.
Many few of you will know Oplontis, in the first two articles we talked about Pompeii and Herculaneum, both affected by the eruption of Vesuvius, but you must know that together with these, Oplontis was also affected.
Eccoci finalmente qui, all'ultimo capitolo di questo viaggio verso l'antica Campania, in questo ultimo articolo del mio blog, vorrei parlarvi di Villa Poppea ad Oplontis ( ora città di Torre Annunziata ) e del museo archeologico di Napoli,che contiene moltissimi ritrovamenti provenienti dagli scavi di Ercolano e Pompei.
Molti pochi di voi conosceranno Oplontis, nei primi due articoli abbiamo parlato di Pompei ed Ercolano, entrambe colpite dall'eruzione del Vesuvio, ma dovete sapere che insieme a queste fu colpita anche Oplontis.
Villa Poppea is a large residential building from the 1st century BC.
Fortunately the villa wasn’t inhabited at the time of the eruption, so there were no further victims. It is a villa full of numerous rooms including the oecus, a banquet hall, full of frescoes like all the rooms. The triclinium, a frescoed dining room with triclinia (beds) on the sides where one would lie down to eat. Common areas such as the kitchen, living room, atrium, latrines, and very important was the calidarium, a room heated by the hot air coming from the floor and walls. This too has numerous frescoes with the presence of plant elements, such as the garden of the Hesperides.

Fortunatamente la villa non era abitata al momento dell'eruzione, quindi non ci sono state ulteriori vittime. E' una villa ricca di numerosi ambienti tra cui, l'oecus, sala per i banchetti, ricca di affreschi come tutte le stanze. Il triclinio, una sala da pranzo affrescata con ai lati i triclini (letti) dove ci si sdraiava per mangiare. Ambienti comuni come cucina, salone, atrio, latrine, molto importante fu il calidarium, una sala riscaldata grazie all'aria calda che proveniva da pavimento e pareti. Anche questa presenta numerosi affreschi con la presenza di elementi vegetali, come il giardino delle Esperidi.
The villa also had a large outdoor swimming pool and a large peristilium, that is, a portico with columns that surrounded the garden. It was a widely used space for otium.
The villa is a perfect image, useful for the archaeological and architectural reconstruction, of the urban and rustic Roman villas. It is a very important source for the conservation of both the rooms and the frescoes.
La villa aveva anche una grande piscina all'aperto e un grande peristilio, cioè un grande portico con colonne che contornava il giardino. Era uno spazio molto utilizzato per l'otium. La villa è un'immagine perfetta, utile alla ricostruzione archeologica ed architettonica, delle ville urbane e rustiche romane. E' una fonte molto importante per la conservazione sia degli ambienti sia degli affreschi.
In the afternoon we moved to Naples to visit the archaeological museum. The museum contains many finds of all kinds, but I would like to focus exclusively on some frescoes, mosaic and statues from the Roman era.
Very important is the mosaic of Alexander recovered from the house of the Faun in Pompeii, it represents the battle of Issus between Alexander the Great and Darius III in 333 BC. with which the Persian empire ended.
Nel pomeriggio ci siamo spostati verso Napoli per la visita al museo archeologico. Il museo contiene numerosissimi reperti di ogni genere, ma vorrei focalizzarmi esclusivamente su alcuni affreschi e statue di epoca romana.
Importantissimo è il mosaico di Alessandro recuperato dalla casa del Fauno di Pompei, rappresenta la battaglia di Isso tra Alessandro Magno e Dario III del 333 a.c. con la quale ebbe fine l'impero persiano.
In the museum there are also numerous frescoes also from Pompeii such as the one depicting Terentius Neo and his wife found in the house of Terentio in Pompeii. It is a portrait of the couple in fashionable clothes, we know that he is a baker and that he probably wanted to enter good society. Another important fresco is the one that represents a brawl inside the amphitheater of Pompeii, it is fundamental because it reproduces the building in a very realistic way and therefore is an essential source also for understanding how the games took place inside the amphitheater.
Nel museo poi sono presenti numerosi affreschi anche questi provenienti da Pompei come quello che raffigura Terentius Neo e la moglie trovato nella casa di Terentio a Pompei. E' proprio un ritratto della coppia vestiti alla moda, sappiamo che lui è un panettiere e che probabilmente volesse entrare nella buona società. Altro affresco importante è quello che rappresenta una rissa all'interno dell'anfiteatro di Pompei, è fondamentale perchè riproduce in maniera molto realistica l'edificio e quindi risulta una fonte essenziale anche per capire come si svolgevano i giochi all'interno dell'anfiteatro.
Of the statues, on the other hand, I chose two, the first represents Heracles at rest, it is from the end of the 2nd or beginning of the 3rd century AD. and was found in the Baths of Caracalla. The statue is 3 meters high with great attention to the anatomy of the man, who is represented tired and not while he is fighting, this statue is very important because it is a copy of the original bronze made by Lysippos.Another sculpture found in the Baths of Caracalla is the Farnense bull is a sculptural group of the II BC. in which the bull is represented, held by two men Anfione and Zeto, and poor Dirce who is suffering from the bull.
Delle statue invece ne ho scelte due, la prima rappresenta Eracle a riposo, è della fine del II o inizi del III d.C. ed è stata trovata nelle terme di Caracalla. La statua è alta 3 metri con una grande attenzione all'anatomia dell'uomo, che è rappresentato stanco e non mentre sta combattendo, è molto importante questa statua perchè è una copia dell'originale bronzea fatta da Lisippo. Altra scultura trovata nelle terme di Caracalla è il toro farnense è un gruppo scultoreo del II a.C. nel quale sono rappresentati il toro, tenuto da due uomini Anfione e Zeto, e la povera Dirce che è legata sofferente al toro.
