Nafakhum Falls is located in Thanchi Upazila of Bandarban District. It is termed as one of the largest waterfalls in Bangladesh in terms of water flow. Others call it the Niagara of Bangladesh. To see Nafakhum, you have to go to Remakri by boat on the Sangu river route from Thanchi Bazar.
Remakri has a Marma settlement, Khum means waterfall in the Marma language. This beautiful view of nature can be seen only after walking for about three hours from Remakri. The water of the Remakri Canal has come down to Nafakhum about 25-30 feet. This is how nature gave birth to this waterfall. The water vapor of the rapidly descending water appears like a constant rainbow in the sunlight.
If you are an adventure lover and want to trek in Bandarban, or the tribal life, Sangur Rup, then you should visit this waterfall at least once in your life.
Adventure lovers visit Nafakhum Falls throughout the year. However, the water of the Sangu river is above the limit during monsoon. At that time permission was not given from the administration to go to Nafakhum. In winter, water is very less in Nafakhum. So the most ideal time is after monsoon and before winter (September – November). But whatever time you go - why, you'll love the nature here.
If you want to go to Nafakhum, you have to come to Bandarban district first. Thanchi upazila from there. Remakri Bazaar on the river route from Thanchi Bazaar. Nafakhum will be reached by trekking from Remakri Bazar.
Besides, you can come to Chittagong by train or plane and come to Bandarban by bus from Chittagong. Buses are available from Dhampara bus stand. Rent is 220 Tk. Microbus fare 3000-3500 Tk. No more permission is granted after 3 pm. So you have to reach Thanchi before that. Life jackets can be rented for Tk 50.
You will be impressed by the Sangu river on the way. Besides, Padmukha, Tindu, Rajapathar, Barapathar and Remakri falls will pass on the way. Not all places can be stopped for safety reasons. However, you can go down to the boulder area and take pictures.
Try to start early in the morning (within 1 hour of sunrise). Then you will be saved from the heat of the sun.There is no need to drink any kind of water except some dry food. Because small springs are rarely found. Drink their water, absolutely fresh. There are few shops in Nafakhum. You can buy and eat if you need. Tell me what to eat for lunch. Then they will keep cooking.
There is nothing to fear. The guide will help you in all cases. You have to pay for the guide's stay and food. Sometimes the boatmen also ask for money. However, it is not mandatory to give it. A trip to Nafakhum will be remembered for a lifetime.
