The centrally located Calle Ancha in the old city of Cádiz has looked the same for hundreds of years. The elegant facades of the houses of the city's wealthiest citizens are still intact and well maintained. Some have needed to be converted into tourist flats in order to survive in the most expensive area of the city.
Balconies retain their wrought ironwork and handmade glass. Flower boxes add a touch of colour.
The Calle Ancha is now pedestrianised and in the shops you can find bars, cafés and ice-cream parlours where you can sit and enjoy the atmosphere of a place that has been untouched for centuries.
On the lampposts you will find the coat of arms of Lisbon made of wrought iron. A ship with two crows. One at the bow and the other at the stern.
Other buildings have been converted into multiple flats with the inner courtyards remaining as a communal area. Possibly this dwelling was the home of a wealthy merchant of the city. Cadiz was the point of arrival of all the products from America.

Other buildings are rented flats. It is a luxury for a traveller to be able to stay in a street with so much history and beauty. Buildings that withstood the bombardment of the cannons of Napoleon's troops trying to take the only city in Spain that was still free.
There is a song that was sung in the city to encourage the population against Napoleon's attacks.
With the bombs that the braggarts throw, the Cádiz women make themselves into ringlets".
When the bombs exploded, they exploded in wavy pieces of metal. By not causing casualties, they implied that this material was used to shape the ladies' manes.
I already miss the walks through the oldest city in southern Spain.
