In the town of Tarifa, in the south of Spain, there is a castle whose façade looks like something out of a fairy tale. It is situated on the top of a promontory where in the Middle Ages a small hermitage of the same name was located. At that time the hermitage was only a few hundred metres from the town, but in the last few decades the town has grown and is now practically surrounded by buildings, next to the port and the beach.
En la ciudad de Tarifa, en el sur de España se encuentra un castillo que por su fachada parece sacado de un cuento. Situado en lo alto de un promontorio donde en la edad media se situaba una pequeña ermita con el mismo nombre. Por aquella época la ermita estaba a unos cientos de metros de la ciudad, pero en las últimas décadas la población ha crecido quedando prácticamente rodeado de edificios, junto al puerto y la playa.
This small elevation has a long military history from ancient times to the present day, which can be seen in the remains of forts and tunnels excavated around it.
Esta pequeña elevación tiene una gran historia militar desde épocas remotas, hasta la actualidad y se nota viendo los restos de fortines y túneles excavados a su alrededor.
The building was constructed in the early 20th century and was used by the armed forces and as an observation point. It is now abandoned.
El edificio fue construido a principios del siglo XX y fue usado por las fuerzas armadas y como punto de observación. Actualmente se encuentra abandonado.
The entrance is closed and the doors and windows are boarded up, but it is possible to enter through a side opening.
Su acceso está cerrado y las puertas y ventanas están tapiadas, pero por una apertura lateral se puede entrar.
The interior leaves all thoughts of it being a fairytale castle behind. Its state of abandonment and signs of being used by homeless people due to old mattresses and leftover food.
El interior deja atrás todo pensamiento de que sea un castillo de cuento. Su estado de abandono y con muestras de ser usado por gente sin hogar por haber colchones viejos y restos de comida.
The windows have been insulated with a modern aluminium and glass enclosure, but vandalism has vandalised them as well as the walls and floor.
Las ventanas han sido aisladas con un cerramiento moderno de aluminio y cristal, pero actos vandálicos los han destrozado como las paredes y el suelo.
Going up to the third floor we find the balconies and the terrace with unbeatable views.
Subiendo a la tercera planta encontramos los balcones y la terraza con vistas inigualables.
The state of disrepair makes it a dangerous place to stay, but I have been longing to go up and see the views from the top for years. The Strait of Gibraltar with Africa in the background, which from the balconies seems even closer.
El estado de deterioro hace peligroso la estancia, pero llevaba años deseando subir y ver las vistas desde lo alto. El Estrecho de Gibraltar con África al fondo, que desde sus balcones parece más cerca aun.
The village is at the back. You can make out the white houses of the old walled town.
El pueblo queda a la espalda. Se puede distinguir las casas blancas de la villa vieja amurallada.
The beach of Tarifa with its kilometres of sand seen from the top of the castle at sunset is a luxury.
La playa de Tarifa de arenas kilométricas vistas desde lo alto del castillo en el atardecer es un lujo.
