Upper suburb of Ronda // Arrabal alto de Ronda

in Pinmapple2 years ago

This is a neighbourhood that arose when the Arab city of Ronda grew and the walls had to be extended to defend the new urban area. The location of the suburb was on the old Gibraltar road just before the city cemetery. It was built in the 13th century and is the most modern part of the city's defensive complex.

The horseshoe-arched main gate is defended by two semicircular towers. Inside is the San Francisco quarter and the convent of the same name.

After the Reconquest, the Christians opened a second gate, right next to it, and a watering trough for the horses was added.

Climbing up to the battlements and walking along the top of the walls, we have a good view of the upper suburb, now called the San Francisco quarter. Some of the houses are so close to the walls that you could climb up to their roofs with their smoky chimneys smelling of burning firewood.

Just above the suburb are the remains of the alcazaba or main castle of the city. It was destroyed by the Christians during the reconquest and later by Napoleon's troops.

From the battlements if we look south, we can see the old road to Gibraltar where the cemetery used to be, which has now formed a new neighbourhood. In the background are the mountains of the Sierra de las Nieves.

Walking through this place makes you feel like you have travelled back in time to the Middle Ages. Now it is time to look for a good inn and have a hot meal.
