STREET ART #76 - From amusement park to cultural park (Aalborg, Denmark)

At the beginning of August, I was on a family visit to Aalborg. During the week-end we went for a walk to a park called Karolinelund. In recent years, this park has been transformed from an amusement park into a cultural park. I remember the carousels and the clown, years back when I came here as a child with my parents. The park has changed a lot since then. Now it seems as the street artists have completely taken over the walls, benches and staircaises. This is only a small collection!

The old entrance from 1947

Karolinelund is a park that provides recreational opportunities for the city's inhabitants. A small green lung in the middle of the city. You will find a playground for the little ones. The youth will be playing ball, jog or be doing skateboarding.

In addition, concerts, events and art exhibitions are arranged. Around the park there is a wall that is also used by graffiti artists. Last time I was visiting the park, was in 2016 and at that time I only saw a few graffiti.

We walked along the wall on the inside of the park and then the outside. It's not only on the inside that it's decorated. On the outside there is not a piece of gray cement left! When we saw benches, stairs, garbage cans and containers with graffiti, then we realized that it must be because there is no more space on the walls.

Since I was here with my sister, she could tell me about the artists. Most of them are locals, living in Aalborg. She also knew what's new, since she comes through the park regularly.

Karolinelund has not allways been a recreational park. The park was established in 1947 as an amusement park and a Tivoli of the old-fashioned type (like Tivoli in Copenhagen). But the Tivoli itself was closed down in 2010. Not sure for what reason, but it might have been because they did not manage the competition from the large and more modern amusement parks that have arisen in recent times.

But it all started with an idea in 1824. When Karolinelund was established, it was named after King Fredrik VI's daughter Caroline. The military was given responsibility for the area, which was a swampy piece of land. But they drained the land. Planted the area and laid canals. At the end of the 1800s, the park became municipal property. A pavilion and outdoor stage were built to hold outdoor concerts. Although the park's content has changed, the outdoor concerts are one of the things that are still part of the entertainment.

It's not often I visit the park, but this time was a real surprise because of all the graffiti. Since the works are replaced periodically, I guess I have to start checking it out each time I am in town.
