Novigrad, Croatia is small town on the shore of a big lake. My dad and I stayed here for one night while on an adventure tour through Croatia. On the day that we stayed in Novigrad, we had spent the day white water rafting in small, two-person rafts. The day before, we had gone rafting in big rafts and it wasn't very exciting. This day's rafting trip would prove to be a lot more adventurous.
I was trying to find some information about Novigrad, but there isn't much info to be found. The wikipedia entry for Novigrad Castle contains only this:
In 1386, the Hungarian and Croatian sovereign Mary and her mother, Elizabeth of Bosnia, were imprisoned in Novigrad Castle. Elizabeth was strangled.
I guess that's all there is to say about Novigrad Castle.
Our day started out with a drive to the river that we would be rafting on. We stopped on a hill for some photos.
Eventually we made it to the river and put on our safety gear. We grabbed our rafts and got out on the water. Our guide provided big plastic jugs for us to put our phones and food into.
Much of the rafting trip was placid and lush, but we did hit some fairly big rapids.
At lunch we parked at a grassy area and walked to a small pool that had a waterfall pouring into it.
After lunch we got back on the river and things started to get more exciting. We hit several waterfalls. One was too big to ride down, so we all had to get out and walk down to the bottom. People carried our rafts down for us.
There was also a waterfall that we were able to ride down. We had to have one person get out of the raft and go down solo. It was the highlight of the day for me.
We continued on down the river and eventually came to a place where we turned in our rafts.
I enjoyed this rafting trip in the small rafts more than the trip in the large rafts. Not only was the river more exciting, but I preferred the autonomy of the small rafts. In the big rafts, a guide tells everyone when to paddle and controls where we go and when we stop. In the small rafts, we could pretty much do what we liked.
On the way to Novigrad, we stopped at an overlook and took some photos. We didn't actually stay in this part of the town. We were around the bend on the main part of the lake.
For years I thought the photos above were of a river. Looking at the map, it's actually a skinny, bendy part of a big lake. The photos were taken from the red pin.
My dad and I had dinner by the lake and turned in for the next day's adventure. We were done with all of the exciting parts of the tour and the group was going to be hiking for the remainder of the adventure tour. I'm not a fan of hiking, but it's a good activity for taking photos.
Stay tuned for tomorrow's post about hiking through one of Croatia's national parks!
