Let's travel together #182 - Movilele de la Șona (The Pyramids of Șona)

in Pinmapple3 years ago

Feeling like some modern Indiana Jones while exploring Romania was never on our list, but however we managed to also do it while we found ourselves walking between some huge pyramids which are coming with lots of mysterious stories about how they appeared and what they have to offer for the people who are crossing by.

Along with the mysteries Transylvania keeps offering for the locals and not only, we remember some natural treasures we discovered by mistake during our yearly road trip around Romania from 2020.
I've mentioned countless times that no matter how much time you spend on the road exploring Transylvania, you will, literally, never get enough time to discover everything, because every single time we believe we are one step closer to conquering these lands entirely, our hypothesis is changed when we look twice on the map and realize that we, almost, haven't visited anything from what Romania has to offer to us.
If there are people who have been following my travel journals for a long time now, you'll already know that 95% of my travels are placed in my home country while I had just one chance to travel abroad and spend three days in Barcelona.
Of course, this comes with some consequences since my whole bucket list is full with places I wish to visit sometime during my life, one of them being the famous pyramids from Egypt which seem so different from what a European could see. More likely a different world that can be understood only when you make your steps on that direction and not just visit them virtually by reading others' experiences exploring them.

However, nature and Romania proved one more time that no matter what you wish to see, you could find something pretty similar on the home country lands until you'll afford to jump on the plane and explore the foreign realms for a proper experience.

Of course, this comes with a very rural landscape, and not so many people and tourists that ever heard about them before, but which also brings a bonus to your journey, finding yourself walking alone through the green giants that somehow, manage to offer you that kind of experience you are looking for.

Along with the places from Romania that surprised us, we remember the flooded canyons that made me feel closer to the excitement exploring Grand Canyon which is on top of my bucket list, the thermal waterfalls unique in Europe along with the one from Italy, the cave of crystals, unique in Europe and world, there being only one more open to be visited by tourists in South Africa, the purest waterfall from the world with 0 bacteria while the others have no less than 7 bacteria in their composition, the single place where The Black Sea, Danube Delta and some lakes are meeting, and more.
However I never imagined that I could find a replicate to the pyramids from Egypt just a few km away from where I'm currently living, so that came with a lot of excitement and adrenaline in my veins to explore every single part of them.
They are known as The Pyramids of Șona an even though they date for many years, they still represent a huge mystery for both the locals and researchers due to the many answers given to the question: How these were formed?

There is a number of 8 such pyramids placed on two parallel rows, starting with the smallest one until the biggest ones that are reaching even 30 meters in height, which makes us believe their placement is not randomly picked and that there were some people behind their apparition.

Even though The Pyramids of Șona have been found thousands of years ago, 700 years ago the Saxons community managed to build an entire village close to them called Șona which came with lots of legends about these and their apparition even if the pyramids existed a long time before they started populating these lands.

The reasons are quite simple, the Saxons were very interested in the fertile lands and the hills which are all facing the sun. They started building here lots of houses and orchards of apples, plums and grapes. However, since there was always a little competition between Saxons and the people from Ţara Făgăraşului, around five centuries ago they decided to leave everything behind and move to the west where they built another village with the same name, but this time being part of a different county and avoid getting in conflicts again with the original locals of Transylvania.

Even though The Pyramids of Șona are not made of stone as these from Egypt are, they don't deserve less attention and curiosity from people because they still represent an enigma even in the 21st century due to the conclusions made by the researchers which are the opposite to what locals believe when it comes when someone mentions their name.
While the researchers assume that they found pottery from the late Bronze Age and the Hallstatt Period around the pyramids, they believe we are talking about some pyramids which were built by Dacian people to hide their treasures, but the whole explanation is being changed by the geologists who believe we are staying in front of some natural disasters that were caused due to a specific process of slipping a slope in steps that happened over 12.000 years ago.
However, since the pyramids are placed form the little to the bigger ones and due to the legends of giants populating these lands a long while ago, locals tend to believe we are talking about the houses of some giants which are resting under the huge green hills and which should not be ever bothered by the intervention of treasure seekers and authorities.

Though, an interesting aspect is that a single pyramid is composed of different layers, beginning with the main layer of clay that makes the water and rain impossible to be absorbed by them, being followed by sand and black soil which is very uncommon for this area.

Though, thinking about the way these pyramids were build following their increasing size and placed on two parallel lines, the historical explanation remains the closer one to reality and it's very possible that every person who climbs all the way up to a pyramid to enjoy the view, to sit on some huge treasures that could be buried right into the heart of these formations without even realizing it.

Another interesting and sad thing is that even though we have some mysterious places that I'm quite sure they represent another unique thing in the world, they are still not so promoted by people and they don't enjoy the same level of tourists that the other pyramids get, which also comes with a good thing because the process of digging into the pyramids or people searching for the treasures on here is forbidden, a thing that could easily lose control if more people were stepping between the huge green pyramids.

However, let's not forget about the inexplicable situations that some locals were part of, leaving a bowl filled with water next to them which in just a few days the water acquires healing properties, the bowl with the meat that never rots, as well as the razor blade that sharpens herself if it's placed one third away from the base of one of the pyramids.

All these aspects, together with the conclusions made by either geologists and researchers, made The Pyramids of Șona an entire enigma that doesn't seem to find the appearance explanation anytime soon, but which still enjoys seeing tourists once in a while that gets to appreciate nature as it is without seeking for a proper answer because overall we are the ones who step over these lands and should leave them as they are, instead of searching for some responses which are clear they are not part of the 21st century.

However, our journey came to an end and we loved feeling like some modern Indiana Jones for a few hours we spent while walking between the beautiful pyramids and in order to reach The Pyramids of Șona you have to either follow the European road E68 or national road DN1 from Brasov to Fagaras because the village is located just 5 km away from Fagaras.
There is also a possibility of visiting the pyramids if you come from Sibiu (as we did) which is 83 km away from this place and you have to follow all the way to Mandra Oltului Village from where you will find some road signs that will lead you there.
