Let's travel together #228 - Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul (Fountain of Mihai Viteazul)

in Pinmapple2 years ago

Sometimes you don't need to visit a museum or some ruins to find out a little bit more about the history of your home country, because there are genuine pieces of the past left even on one of the main roads if you pay enough attention when driving by.

Not for a few times we decided to drive tens, even hundreds of km away from our home place just with one thought - to find out more about the past of Romania, of the ruins we get to see on the remained citadels that are still dominating some of the highest hills of the country, but also to learn more of the things that were never presented in school but they are yet so important for each history lover or for those who love their country.
However, during our yearly road trip taken in 2021, while we were still on the road, all the way to the next objective from our list, we had to stop the car and add another thing we've seen in the past summer which even though we didn't know about its existence, it was literally impossible not to observe it even from the car because it was placed on the right side of one of the main roads of the country we were driving on.
Even though the weather was not in our favor with the rain that was already shacking drops of water from the clouds, both I and my father wanted to find out more of what the interesting monument we were seeing was all about. More than just taking a picture in rush from the inside of the car.

So we decided to get out of the car and quickly go to the monument, read the inscriptions from it, and pay attention to the details which were so curious even for us who already have seen lots of historical monuments and places before.

To make a short parenthesis here, the address of the place where I'm currently living is also named after one of Romania's greatest national heroes, Mihai Viteazul, because just a few tens of meters away from here, you will be able to find another monument raised in the name of this hero, but which I should make a separate post about one day.

Just as how every place out there has its important names in history, so does Romania. And I know that maybe for some of you this name won't say much, but to summarize in a few words, Mihai Viteazul was the Prince of Wallachia, Prince of Moldavia, and de facto ruler of Transylvania. You can also find more about him on wikipedia where his name is translated as Michael the Brave. If you are passionate about the history of the world, I'm sure you will find plenty of interesting information to add to your backpack of knowledge.

The current monument which is described as a fountain even though it has everything needed to make it work but still never did in the over 45 years since it was built, represents the place where Mihai Viteazul together with his army rested for a night in 1599 when he was crossing on this road.
Every single detail presents the exact representation of those times including how the army was surrounding the prince with two on his right and four on his left, but also the symbol placed above him which is the official emblem used to show the union between the three sides of Romania that Mihai Viteazul managed to stick in a single piece.
The Fountain of Mihai Viteazul was raised when exactly 375 years passed since the prince crossed this part of Romania, to prove the respect of the locals which not for a few times were saved by his majesty when all kinds of battles and invasions were taking part on these lands, the creator of the whole architecture being Gheorghe Coman that brought his contribution also on The Carving Camp that I wrote more about in a previous article, but which is very close to this one and can be easily visited both in the same day.

Even though Buzau county stands out with many unique and interesting places to be seen while you are in Romania, both outdoors and urban, this fountain is considered one of the most important sightseeing attractions that no one should ever miss, especially if you are driving on the national road DN10 where is placed.

Even the materials used are not randomly picked but actually composed from the resources available in Măgura which are quite unique from what you would normally see being used on this type of monument, talking about a shelly limestone which is composed of fossilized marine organisms, cemented in the sand where they lived many millions of years ago.

Anyway, I know that finding a little bit more about the past of your home country is definitely a great way to spend some of your time, but when you get to enrich your knowledge right from the source rather than reading on the internet or in a book, everything feels different and more genuine, and this is the exact way I always preferred to discover pieces of history.

In order to reach Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul, you don't need to hike or walk for a few hours until you meet your destination as I probably got you used with most of my posts, because it's placed on the right bank of the Buzau River and road which is DN10.

By following the route between Buzau and Brasov, at one point you will make your way through the Măgura village which also represents the home of this interesting historical monument that I'm happy we noticed during our driving to the next objective from our list.

Don't forget that there are plenty of places looking forward to surprise their tourists with, but you simply need to look around you a little bit more than usual instead of being 100% focused on the GPS that won't bring in your attention the real gems of history.

Wuaoo how beautiful, I like how the figures of the horse and the soldier are defined, it is a pity that it does not emanate water as was its initial purpose.

It provokes me to touch it, how much energy it reflects, what a good publication greetings Grabriela.

Oh yeah, the sculpturor definitely paid great attention to details and he made a nice job!

Unfortunately the single minus is that is not working even though it has all the needed elements to do so. Maybe things will change in the future because I still have hope for that! ☺️

Thank you for stopping by! Hope you have a nice Sunday! 🤗
