Let's travel together #234 - Having fun on the Bobsled Track from Ghimes (The longest track in Romania)

in Pinmapple2 years ago

Keeping alive your inner kid along with the passage of time is, perhaps, amongst the most valuable things someone can be accompanied while going through life. Happily, we managed to find a place where to have lots of fun while chasing our next destination!

During our yearly road trip around Romania, we always focus on outstanding and less known places that we could explore and present them further with the hope that more people will realize how precious Romania's tourism is.
However, this leads to plenty of places seen daily and spending lots of the time on the road going from point A to point B and so on, trying to catch up with more and more locations we want to see in a period of 10-14 days only.
What we often forget to do though, is to enjoy the whole ride to the next stop being caught up with the attention to the GPS and on the notepad with our list of must-see, not looking enough around us and the beauty that is surrounding us.
The road trip from the summer of 2021 was different though, and I'm not talking about the pandemic which was still raising all kind of restrictions here and there, but because we managed to take a break from the whole rush and stop in a place where it doesn't matter what your age number is because you will still have plenty of fun. Guaranteed!

Even though we are talking about a tiny village that you can't find too much about other than that it's part of Harghita county that is mostly populated with both Hungarians and bears, lol (small joke), but also that it belongs historically and culturally to the region of Transylvania.

However, we managed to discover a little bit more than what the internet was offering to us on a quick search, and that's how we found out about a ski slope which got an interesting way to make the tourists return to it even when there is no snow on it. Namely, arranging a 1,300 meters long bobsled track!

Now depending on the region where you are living, this kind of sport might be more or less popular. However, the single place where I've seen this before was during the Winter Olympics on TV or on the internet but which was held on ice and not on rails anyway.

The best part is that the whole thing has no age limit and the price for one ride is quite decent considering that we are talking about the longest bobsled track from Romania that in my opinion has all the reasons to charge more for one ticket.

Prices and schedule

  • Kid Ticket (3-14 years): 15 RON/3.04 EUR per person & per ride;
  • Adult Ticket: 18 RON/3.65 EUR per person & per ride.

The kids between 3-12 years must be supervised by their parents in order to have access to the track, otherwise, admission is forbidden.

The bobsled track is open daily between 9 AM to 9 PM.

Before beginning the ride, you will get instructions on both how to stay so you avoid hurting yourself while taking curves, but also how to control the bob sleigh because there are just two handles that you have to operate simultaneously in order to increase or lower the speed.

In the beginning, crossing 1,300 meters with a bob sleigh seemed like a way too short ride for me but the tiny vehicles are limited to the speed of 45 hm/h to keep yourself safe and also not rush the whole journey which will take you up and down, but also through the underground tunnels and then back to the spectacular landscapes which will fascinate you in no time!

As soon as the journey comes to an end, there is a little screen which will present some pictures taken with each participant during the ride which you can purchase from the same place where you got the visiting tickets.

Personally, we decided not to purchase these ones but we still managed to capture some pictures with our phones during the filled with adrenaline journey we had at SkiGyimes, and I can't wait to exploit this kind of activity in more places of the country because there are quite a few more that can be found here and there but which are not as long as this one was.

The whole complex is located in the village with the same name (Ghimes) on the national road DN12A which makes the connection between Transylvania and Moldova, Miercurea Ciuc being just 30 km away from it.

Hi @gabrielatravels, great to see you're still discovering new places to visit and that the horrid Covid did not stop you altogether! That ride must take you through some really nice countryside!

Hey Liz! It actually have been quite a long while since my last trip but fortunately I have lots of memories collected in folders that I can use for my travel blogs.

This joruney though, was so different than the adrenaline we usually feel in the mountains! Plus the landscapes which were stunning too!

Thank you for stopping by. Hope you have a nice weekend! ☺️

Harghita is amazing, personally I like it more than the beaches of the Black Sea or the Prahova Valley.
I visited this place too, did I think 4 laps, didn't want to leave.

I don't think it's easy to compare a mountain place with the beach since they are both so different from each other, but I'm sure everything has its own beauty and reasons to make people return. Personally, seeing the sea so rare makes me miss it more often than I thought 😁

However, I still think Harghita and its surroundings sound amazing, everyone has their own taste in places.
I've seen the beaches and the Black Sea in Romania many times, honestly, it doesn't impress me anymore.
Have a wonderful weekend!😊

Have a cool weekend too! 😇

It always looks so scary when I see the people on bobsled on TV, the speed looks awfully fast. How long did it take you to complete the whole track?

Oh yeah! That scares me pretty badly too!

Not sure about the time but probably around 3-5 minutes. Even if you can speed up in some parts, you kind of have to keep a distance of at least 25m from the one in front of you for safety purposes.

And considering that there were lots of families with kids, they had a pretty slow ride too. But even if you drive with 20km/h feels fast back there!

That is the best way to travel! Or as they say, getting lost in Venice is the number one rule for traveling there. However, it might not be so safe to get lost in certain countries like my own (South Africa).

I am so jealous of this bob slay! We have a similar one, but it is 600 meters long, and triple the price! I think we paid close to 20 EUR for the ride per person. With covid and our country's lockdowns, tourism took a big knock and they want to work back the losses, so I guess we locals need to pay up for their losses. It seems a bit unfair! But such is life.

Thank you for sharing this awesome experience. Hopefully, I will find myself in your country soon! Safe travels.

I didn't follow different tracks to make a comparison on the length I had on this one with what would mean just half of it but that price is crazy!

I mean, the tourism from the whole world has suffered a lot but it's a little bit greedy to force people pay crazy amounts instead of making them want to explore their homecountry by themselves rather than finding more interesting similar offers but in different countries if that makes sense.

I hope you get to see Romania one day though! It has plenty to offer 🙌🏻

That is true right. High prices will only scare the locals away, as it did with us! So now they want to target the tourists from other countries but they are also complaining about the high prices! Greedy owners are the problem.

I really hope I can travel there, to explore the awesome country and try local cuisine. Hopefully I will get the opportunity sometime.

1.3km at 45km/h is almost 2 minutes of pure adrenaline, because those things at that speed is insane!! I like how they generally add warning signs to use the brakes and stuff... when they know exactly that I won't use the brakes hihihih

Hahaha, that's what I thought too! But considering that you have to keep a minimum distance from the one in front of you.. you'll have to use the break from time to time 🥺

Not if you push them altogether \o\o\ {don't}

I live in a tropical country, so bobsled is rarely heard here. I only became familiar with the sport when I saw the movie Cool Runnings when I was a kid.
But this bobsled track does not require snow. It looks like a mini-roller coaster ride. Looks like you had lots of fun in this ride.

Oh yeah, even though we have quite a lot of snow in Romania during the winter, this one was arranged on rails so it can be enjoyed any time of the year actually. But it was so fun!
