Along with our days spent in Harghita county during the yearly roadtrip we take in Romania, we ended up discovering spontaneous another place while we were on the road to our next destination.
It often happens to come with a well arranged notepad including the places we want to visit in the respective year but to return home with a lot more explorations we've made just because some of these are not so visible on the map when we plan our trip so if it happens to cross a road sign that stirs our interest indicating there is something cool to visit, we stop the car and see that one first before continuing our journey.
However, the lake was actually surrounding the road we were driving on when we thought that it's time to take a break from the day that was just starting and admire this one in its whole beauty even though it was raining outside.
Along with the hundreds of expeditions we had out there, we sort of explored the beauty of nature in all its moments including torrential rain, snow, powerful sun, but also during the dry times which creates a pretty sad landscape.
Anyway, what surprised me the most while visiting Frumoasa Lake was not just its name where "frumoasa" basically means "beautiful" but also the colour of the water which was very colourful and clean even during the rain. I'm used to see the water become a lot muddier during this time of the year so it definitely deserves its name if it keeps its beauty when it's raining too.
However, as beautiful as the lake is, as its properties are that make it assure 50% of the potable water needed by Miercurea Ciuc city, but also to protect this one against possible floods.
Perhaps everyone knows that if the water is potable, then it's a must to find there plenty of species of fish but especially trout which can only live in potable water.
So if you needed some sort of proof that the water is safe to be drunk, then seeing trout in it, is the best evidence.
Hence why, along with the people who are stopping by either to have some relaxing moments in nature or to simply fill their bottle with some fresh water, there are also the fishermen that are never missing from the shore but who complete the landscape perfectly with a beautiful, yet a minimalist way of living where nature offers all you need for a happy life.
Though, we gotta say that the most beautiful contrast is noticed where the lake reaches the edge of the dam that was built between 1980 - 1986 and it's mostly composed of argil reaching a height of 28 meters and a length of a bit over 500 meters.
It's true that this is not amongst the longest or largest dams Romania has, but is definitely in the top 3 most beautiful I've seen so far and which have potable water that makes everything a lot more interesting.
Hence why, some of the locals of the village with the same name (Frumoasa) took advantage and arranged all kind of guest houses on the shore that gather more and more tourists with each passing year that come either just to relax or to follow various mountain or bike tracks.
Though, a thing that you should be aware of, is that there is a barrier on the dam with access forbidden but which perhaps was left there to avoid drivers taking their cars on the dam which could create too much pressure on its surface.
Plus, the lake is long enough to find other shores and spots where you can get closer to the water both by on your own or with the car, but with the important mention that the water is quite deep (27 meters), and taking a bath is definitely not recommended.
Also, while visiting the dam and lake comes with no cost, if you want to go fishing you will have to either present a fishing license or just pay daily for doing this activity.
In order to reach the lake, and of course the dam too, you need to follow the national road DN12A which is just 12 km away from the city that enjoys the most of this water, Miercurea Ciuc.
The lake is located in the village with the same name (Frumoasa) and it's just one of the hidden gems of Harghita County.

I love to watch and read about people who travel and I myself also like to travel actively. After reading your blog, too, wanted to visit this wonderful place.
