Comienzo a escribir esta publicación en domingo. Intento marcar los días especiales en el restringido espacio que impone la pandemia. Así, pensando que es domingo, día de caminar un poco, he llegado, en el recuerdo, a esta pequeña ciudad austriaca que les muestro hoy. Es Rust am Neusiedlersee, un lugar muy especial por la hermosa convivencia que sus habitantes han logrado con las cigüeñas.
I start writing this post on Sunday. I try to mark the special days in the restricted space imposed by the pandemic. Thus, thinking that it is Sunday, a day to walk a little, I have arrived, in memory, in this small Austrian town that I show you today. Rust am Nuestraiedelersee is a very special place for the beautiful coexistence that its inhabitants have achieved with the storks.
Rust es un ciudad con larga historia, situada al lado occidental del lago Neusiedl, en el estado de Burgenland, que conecta los límites y la historia de Austria con Hungría. En la fotografía vemos al fondo la Fischerkirche (Iglesia de los pescadores) una construcción del siglo XIII.
Rust is a city with a long history, located on the western side of Lake Neusiedl, in the state of Burgenland, which connects the boundaries and history of Austria with Hungary. In the photograph we see in the background the Fischerkirche (Fishermen's Church), a construction from the 13th century.
Rust está construido por bellos y coloridos edificios. Edificaciones llenas de historia que pueden datarse desde el siglo XVI, que se mantienen bien conservadas.
Rust is built by beautiful and colorful buildings. Houses full of history, which can be dated from the 16th century, which are well preserved.
Algunas hacen gala del preciosismo barroco, otras mantenidas en el respeto al estilo renacentista.
Por ello en el año 2001 la UNESCO colocó al casco histórico de Rust en la lista del Patrimonio Cultural.
Some boast of baroque preciousness, others kept in respect to the Renaissance style. For this reason, in 2001 UNESCO placed the historic center of Rust on the list of Cultural Heritage.
La cercanía al lago Neusiedl convierten la ciudad en un lugar muy visitado. Las características de Rust la convierten en un lugar privilegiado para el turismo. Sus cerca de dos mil habitantes han podido mantener un clima de armonía entre su pasado y su presente, ofreciendo una experiencia gratificante alrededor del lago, en los recorridos por la ciudad y en la tradición del vino.
The proximity to Lake Neusiedl make the city a very visited place. The characteristics of Rust make it a privileged place for tourism. Its nearly two thousand inhabitants have been able to maintain a climate of harmony between its past and its present, offering a rewarding experience around the lake, on city tours and in the wine tradition.
Burgenland es la primera región productora de vino en Austria. Esta actividad es la principal fuente de ingreso de los habitantes de Rust; por todas partes aparecen los anuncios para degustación y compra de un vino de excelente factura que ha ganado fama por producirse en las óptimas condiciones que brinda la cercanía con el lago, además de la diversidad de altura en la que prosperan los viñedos.
Burgenland is the first wine producing region in Austria. This activity is the main source of income for the inhabitants of Rust; everywhere there are advertisements for tasting and buying a wine of excellent invoice that has gained fame for being produced in the optimal conditions offered by the proximity to the lake, in addition to the diversity of altitude in which vineyards thrive.
Diego Nuñez, en su libro Viaje cultural por el viñedo alemán
cita la importancia del vino en la identidad de los habitantes de Rust de la siguiente manera:
Los viticultores de Rust han sido siempre un buen ejemplo de lucha por su identidad vinícola (…) En 1524 la reina María de Hungría concede a los viticultores de Rust marcar con hierro candente los barriles en los que se transportaban los vinos. Todavía hoy esa “R” se sigue aplicando como sello de calidad en los corchos de las botellas. Más tarde, en 1681, el pueblo de Rust compró su libertad al emperador Leopoldo I, convirtiéndose en “ciudad libre” pagando por ello 500 cubas (unos 30.000 litros de su mejor vino).
Diego Nuñez, in his book Cultural trip through the German vineyard
cites the importance of wine in the identity of the inhabitants of Rust as follows:
The Rust winemakers have always been a good example of fighting for their wine identity (…) In 1524, Queen Maria of Hungary granted the Rust winemakers to brand the barrels in which the wines were transported with hot iron. Even today that "R" is still applied as a quality seal on bottle corks. Later, in 1681, the people of Rust bought their freedom from Emperor Leopold I, becoming a "free city" by paying 500 vats (about 30,000 liters of their best wine).
La interesante historia de Rust, la calidad de sus vinos, la belleza de sus edificaciones, de sus calles empedradas y el cuidado que sus habitantes ponen sobre su patrimonio cultural confieren a esta hermosa ciudad un gran atractivo que hace del lugar un destino perfecto.
The interesting history of Rust, the quality of its wines, the beauty of its buildings, its cobbled streets and the care that its inhabitants take to their cultural heritage give this beautiful city a great attraction that makes the place a perfect destination.
Pero, desde mi sensibilidad, lo que confiere a Rust un aire casi mágico es la posibilidad de poder ver, en casi todas las chimeneas, los nidos de las cigüeñas. Basta con levantar la vista para observarlos. Mirar estos nidos y al momento dejarnos llevar por la leyenda es un acto simultáneo. Tratamos de encontrar en el pico de la gran ave el atado donde trae a un recién nacido hasta su casa. Hasta hoy circula en la imaginación la idea de que las cigüeñas traen a los niños. Este mito, como todos, se sustenta en una interpretación de realidades visibles. En este caso, el hecho ancestral de que las parejas se unían en matrimonio en el solsticio de verano, momento en el que las cigüeñas inician su migración para regresar nueve meses después, en la primavera. Este comportamiento convierte a las hermosas aves en simbología del reinicio de la vida.
But, from my sensibility, what gives Rust an almost magical air is the possibility of being able to see, in almost all chimneys, the nests of storks. Just look up to see them. Looking at these nests and instantly letting ourselves be carried away by the legend is a simultaneous act. We try to find in the beak of the great bird the bundle where it brings a newborn home. Until today the idea circulates in the imagination that storks bring children. This myth, like all myths, is based on an interpretation of visible realities. In this case, the ancestral fact that couples were united in marriage at the summer solstice, at which time the storks begin their migration to return nine months later, in the spring. This behavior turns the beautiful birds into symbols of the restart of life.
In many cultures storks are attributed the representation of fidelity, fertility and fatherhood. In Europe this symbol falls on the white stork, since white represents purity. This species is protected and the inhabitants of Rust take this care very seriously, maintaining an association that ensures that the people provide the conditions to sustain and increase the population of these birds; they also run a hospital to care for sick and weak storks.
Quienquiera que observe la relación que mantienen los habitantes de Rust con sus cigüeñas llegará a la conclusión de que el pueblo les pertenece, como a sus habitantes humanos.
Whoever observes the relationship that the inhabitants of Rust maintain with their storks will conclude that the town belongs to them, as it does to its human inhabitants.
Las cigüeñas prefieren las alturas para proteger a sus cigoñinos. Un año tras otro las parejas regresan a sus nidos, colocados en las torres de iglesias o en las campanas de las chimeneas. Los nidos, hechos de palos, pueden alcanzar los dos metros de diámetro y tener mucho peso. No es raro distinguir, en el perfil de Rust, las estructuras de metal con las que los humanos les obsequian una base para que sobre ellas coloquen sus pesados nidos.
Storks prefer heights to protect their little ones. Year after year the pairs return to their nests, placed on church towers or chimney bells. The nests, made of sticks, can reach two meters in diameter and have a lot of weight. It is not uncommon to distinguish, in Rust's profile, the metal structures with which humans give them a base to place their heavy nests on them.
Podemos imaginar de qué manera las cigüeñas han permanecido en el imaginario universal desde los tiempos ancestrales, cuando se las consideraba guardianas de las cuevas húmedas donde nace la vida y yacían las almas de los niños no nacidos.
Sigmund Freud y Karl Jung las han mencionado como símbolo de la maternidad, de lo nutricio, asimilando las cuevas húmedas, de las que habla la tradición, al vientre materno...
Hans Christian Andersen recogió de la tradición oral alemana las creencias sobre estos animales y escribió un cuento, Las cigüeñas, que alerta sobre la necesidad de protegerlas.
We can imagine how storks have remained in the universal imagination since ancient times, when they were considered guardians of the humid caves where life was born and the souls of unborn children lay.

Solo pido poder regresar a ese lugar para volver a asomarme a ese pozo alrededor del cual transcurren los tiempos de Rust am Neusiedlersee.
I say goodbye to you leaving you this photographic memory of the beautiful city that bought your freedom with wine. I can't stop imagining, (with a certain envy) the feasts that Leopold I and his royal court will have had.
I only ask to be able to return to that place to look again at that well around which the times of Rust am Neusiedelersee pass.
