Sexy and sedate: Parnu, Estonia (and me ). June 2021.

in Pinmapple3 years ago

So I pulled into Parnu for a few days, a little bit of R&R in the hectic climbing through windows schedule.

Parnu is a seaside town popular with the Scandis and Russians, and has been since time began I guess. It’s sedate it’s a bit like a cross between Southport in Lancashire and Bournemouth darn saarf .

Quiet and family orientated, and it was very quiet, not many visitors this year again.

fuck off covey

I digress I’ve had too much sun today, let me just tell you whilst I’m here about my Saturday afternoon

It’s about 330pm, get home and think time for a bit of sun
Get the bean bag out
Get my kit off
Pour a cider
Get my latest read
Flob out
Well that was short lived glanced up all round the conservatory door 100’s of flying ants had hatched, inside too FFS,
I’d forgotten about day of the ants!
Rush to the shed,
bits bobbing everywhere,
stub my toe,
shit that hurt
get the ant stop,
rush back knock my bloody cider over, smash glass.
Spray spray spray
Empty
Stamp stamp stamp
I got most of the buggers
Sweep up glass, cut finger!
Grab said gaping wound
Rush to the bathroom
No plasters
Bog roll will do
Feeling faint
Survived.
Time for tea, warm up the shepherds pie left overs,
whack it in the oven 180 for 20 mins
Oops I’d better put some clothes on
More cider!
Eat food
Shit! That was hot, burnt tongue
Throbbing throbbing throbbing
Fill cider dip tongue in, leave
Bliss.
Switch telly on
What shite is that
The wall
Ffs
Back to Parnu

The beach where I spent sometime relaxing, amongst the dunes, the sand was softer

Nope I’m not a lady, and there were a few blokes around, so anyways, when in Rome, and all that,
kit off
Freedom
Point me in the right direction my little soldier, lead the way.
Onwards and upwards.

I decided the dirty muddy brown with a green tinge sea was not for me, not many others ventured in either. Definitely not a blue flag beach!

Looks like people don’t take their rubbish home with them?

Parnu has, like most cities,a river running through it aptly called Parnu River

I took a stroll on a quiet Sunday morning, along the rivers edge to then turn back into the city

At first I didn’t know what this was! A nice quiet spot for some relaxing (!) extreme yoga, and I still don’t know where she has tucked her feet

And well yup I reckon I could do that….. well maybe 40 yes ago!

As I’m nearly at the estuary there was a small marina

Small sailing boats, always bring a certain song into my head and a lump into my throat. It was one of the most inspirational songs in my life, it drove me forward, urging me on when (and I will never forget this either) I was ankles deep in hydraulic oil on a New Year’s Eve freezing cold repairing a major leak on a 5 stand cold reduction mill in the steelworks. Thinking “ I can do without this shit”.
Happy days from a former life on the tools

And I'll sail her up the west coast
Through villages and towns
I'll be on my holidays
They'll be doing the rounds
They'll ask me how I got her I'll say, "I saved my money"

I don’t have a boat but I have that philosophy, hard work never killed anyone

I wandered aimlessly through empty streets soaking it up, this city really has got a great feeling about it, new and old but similar in style.

Parnu, a city that has been under the control of both Germany and The Soviet Union, what stories this lovely door could tell.

Strolling back in land a nice cooling spray waking over thst bridge, in the distance the 17th Tallinn Gate, apparently the oldest city gate of its type in the Baltic/Scandi regions.

Constructed in the 18thc, St. Catherine's was built and paid for by the court of Russian queen Catherine, the second; it was Sunday I peeked

The church is still populated by the Parnu Russian residents.

Parnu also has several museums a mini zoo and the take it out the box, flat pack same as everywhere else shopping mall ( fantastic air con, needed on a day like this).

It is also the meeting point for the ladies and gentlemen who enjoy an early morning drink, and swear at passers by.

It has some nice little boutique hotels, I stayed at and can recommend Alex Maja, plenty of car parking, great air conditioning in the rooms, fantastic breakfast and a superb little terrace garden, where on weekend nights it was fantastic to enjoy, some live music. It got packed with locals, great to see crowds of folk out, no face nappies , no social distancing, happy days mingling and talking by gestures and broken English, whilst imbibing several ice cold ciders.

They'll say, "Isn't she pretty? That ship called Dignity"

Yes, it's a great place with fantastic history. Don't foreget it was ceded peacefully to Poland by the last commander of Parnu convent in 1560 and then conquered by the Swedes and reconquered by the Poles couple of times until finally it became Swedish in 1660.

its been about a bit then

An excellent post about Pärnu which I love a lot despite that I had my arm broken when I was there last time - the result of looking not at the road but up and around 😁. Your "white" poetry is funny ❤️

Thank you Olga, that means a lot from a resident
I hope you are keeping well, I see from your posts you are out and about again.
