So, haapsalu, apparently it has been called the Venice of the North, why I don’t know as it doesn’t have a single canal! Nor the amazing architecture, nor anything else that Venice has to offer!
I stayed overnight at a lovely little guest house on a side street not far away from the old town
A quaint little place, that insisted you took your shoes off in reception before going upstairs to one of only a handful of rooms. I didn’t stay for breakfast, being one of several guests and only one young girl preparing the food fresh, and serving, life for me is too short, the road awaits.
To say the town is “sleepy” is an understatement, though it doesn’t seem to cater for a vast number of tourists, as there don’t seem to be any large corporate hotels about.
It does have a few bars and eateries congregated in an area near the cobbled town square, most were closing at 6pm; I turned up on a national holiday to celebrate the summer solstice, my bad!
No wonder it was quiet
This was a fine place to eat, an outside table to the rear, perfect for sitting in the setting sun.
The menu was short and the food simple but tasty and the cider nicely chilled.
Although there is no beach to speak of at the town, a nice evening stroll on a picturesque promenade around a small lake
Buildings of colour constructed of wood, common to the Baltic and Scandinavian countries, it makes sense, there are a lot of trees in Estonia.Though outdide of the old town, is very lack lustre
Brutal Soviet concrete monolith in its style and appearance. Stick to the old town, it has a castle that houses a museum, it has an entrance fee. I didn’t enter, I’m not a museum kind of person
Would I return? No I don’t think so, charming yes, but not for me a place to go out of the way to visit. There maybe lots more to it that I have missed, who knows.
I did visit Fisherman’s Wharf a derelict abandoned jetty on the following day. That will be blogged in hive-104387, c/Urban Exploration, where the majority of this road trip will be found
One life: live it.
If you are still in Estonia, go to Rummu quarry! An old quarry that was also a prison at some point.
Duh! I drove past that 10 days ago, looked and didn’t stop, not sure what it was damn! only four days left now and I’m up at Narva, I don’t think I will be able to get back there. Win some, lose some I guess
