Here is a further post on Blackpool, an old seaside resort in England. This time looking at some of the fantastic Victorian features that can be found around the town.
Many people consider Blackpool to be quite run down these days, and maybe it is - many people bypass it and jet of to sunnier climes these days, which is a shame. However, it has some real gems around the town, with some pretty impressive Victorian structures.
Blackpool tower is the stand-out building in the town. Clearly a smaller copy of the Eiffel Tower, designed to bring in tourists to the resort. It was opened in 1894. And no matter what you think - its still an impressive structure.
But the town has lots of Victorian beauties - like this kiosk on North Pier. The town really grew in popularity in the 19th century, and hence it has a lot of lovely Victorian features.
These seats along North Pier are just lovely.
The detail in the iron work is just lovely.
And there are a number of beach hut/shelters along the front that are also quite spectacular.
And the pier structures themselves are quite impressive. North Pier was built in the 1860s.
The piers really are quite fantastic.
The grand theatre, opened in 1894, is another Victorian gem.
The one that we really loved was the Winter Gardens - which is a theatre and opera house opened in 1878.
Its quite a large building, and is still busy with shows today. It is clad in a blue and white porcelain tile - which gives it a very distinctive look.
It has some quite interesting detail - like this lion.
They were also fixing one side when we passed - its great to see such a treasure being maintained for the future.
It really is a beautiful building.
If Victorian architecture is your thing - then there really is lots of it to see in Blackpool !
Despite a little run down, their Winter Gardens is a lot more impressive than ours. I wonder, does every seaside town have a Winter Garden?
Lol - maybe !
