Colonia Tovar is a Venezuelan city located in the state of Aragua. It was founded in 1843 by a group of German settlers, following a proposal of the Venezuelan government at the time presided by General José Antonio Páez, in order to take advantage of the contributions of European immigrants.
It is located 65.5 km west of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, and at an altitude of almost 2,000 meters above sea level. It is known for its temperate mountain climate, which can vary between 10 °C and 16 °C. It has frequent fog, especially at dawn and in the afternoon. It depends basically on agriculture and tourism.
Its historic center is made up of several buildings located around the Bolivar Square, including the Church of San Martin de Tours, the Codazzi house, among others. Being the busiest part, you can find restaurants, cafes and craft stores.
The town preserves in its houses, to a great extent, the appearance of the typical German buildings (chalets), which are used in several cases as inns. There are also workshops, in addition to the traditional agricultural activities that are translated in the commercialization of vegetables, fruits, flowers and others.
As mentioned above, Colonia Tovar is located in a geography where misty landscapes predominate, and the cloud forest characterizes the predominant vegetation. It is located within the limits of the Pico Codazzi Natural Monument and near Henri Pittier National Park.
Está ubicada a 65,5 km al oeste de Caracas, capital de Venezuela, y a una altura de casi 2000 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Es conocida por su clima templado de montaña, que puede variar entre 10 °C y 16 °C. Presenta frecuentes nieblas, sobre todo al amanecer y en la tarde. Depende básicamente de la agricultura y del turismo. Su centro histórico lo constituyen varias edificaciones ubicadas alrededor de la plaza Bolívar, entre ellas, la Iglesia de San Martín de Tours, la casa Codazzi, entre otros. Al ser la parte más concurrida, pueden encontrarse restaurantes, cafés y tiendas de artesanía. El pueblo conserva en sus casas, en gran medida, la apariencia de las edificaciones típicas alemanas (chalets), que son utilizadas en varios casos como posadas. También se encuentran instalados talleres, además de las actividades tradicionales agropecuarias que se traducen en la comercialización de hortalizas, frutas, flores y otros. Como se dijo, la Colonia Tovar está asentada en una geografía donde predominan los paisajes de aspecto neblinoso, y el bosque nublado caracteriza la vegetación preponderante. Se encuentra dentro de los límites del Monumento Natural Pico Codazzi y cerca del Parque Nacional Henri Pittier.
