Recently I stumbled upon a coffee shop on my way to my old friends’ office in Bangrak district of Bangkok. This coffee shop is also a art gallery with occasional art exhibition which is open to the public. This place is called Number1 Gallery which is a few minutes walk from Si Wiang street food area.

So, after enjoying lunch or some snacks, you could take a short walk to the end on this road and cross over the main road; a few meters ahead on the left you could see a narrow road with the dark grey building showing number 1 in Thai number. The snacks, cakes and coffee at Number 1 Gallery are cheap comparing with other trendy coffee shops.
I was quite surprised to find a very nice coffee shop plus art gallery nestling in this quiet residential street. The design and decorations inside the old wooden house were quite impressive. The owner must be an artist who has transformed his old family house into art gallery. The kitchen was nicely thought out and placed at the other end of the room making this gallery very spacious. The staff were very polite and considerate making visitors feeling free to walk around the whole house. Visitors could sit quietly here reading books from the small library all day.
I was quite lucky to have the chance to see a new art exhibition by Boonhlue Yangsauy on the theme of “Animal Rights”. He is quite a well known young painter who had four solo art exhibitions and gained several awards. But I must admit that my knowledge of the artists’ world is very limited. So, I was pleasantly surprised to see such high quality art work by Western educated Thai artists. In the past I used to see many exhibitions of post-impressionist style paintings. Since art work become more commercialised during the boom years, I switched my interest to old Chinese paintings and traditional Thai murals.
The artist, Mr. Yangsauy, tried to reflect the sufferings and social disparity between people in Thai society by sarcastically questioning the saying that ‘everyone is equal.’
In his paintings, we could see the hunters and those being hunted which are represented by naked women. The majority of people are represented by animals living in herds reflecting their common survival routine of everyday life. Somehow, they could not escape from this vicious circle of daily struggle.
Many people had to be involved in the black economy: prostitution, knowing full well that this was illegal and unacceptable by others. The artist seemed to be at pain in exposing the unspoken inequality among different classes of people in our society. The rich class was portrayed as the slave driver who continued to exploit the underprivileged and the poor. This is truly a sad and terrible part of our society.
เมื่อเดือนก่อนเราเดินไปหาเพื่อน ที่มีสำนักงานแถวบางรักไม่ไกลจากถนนศรีเวียง ซึ่งถนนสายนี้เต็มไปด้วยร้านอาหารตามสั่ง และร้านขายของกินเล่นมากมายหลายอย่าง ตอนเที่ยงวันจะมีคนออกมาหาของกินอร่อยๆกันเนืองแน่น เราเดินไปจนสุดถนนสายนี้ แล้วข้ามถนนใหญ่ไปฝั่งตรงข้าม เดินตรงไปนิดหน่อยแล้วเลี้ยวซ้าย เราก็เห็นบ้านไม้สองชั้น ทาสีเทาดำมีเลขที่บ้านสีขาวเลขหนึ่งโดดเด่น บ้านนี้เป็นร้านกาแฟ และเป็น แกลารี่แสดงภาพเขียนสีน้ำมันด้วย เราแวะไปลองชิมกาแฟเราจึงได้ชมงานศิลป์ผลงานของคนไทยที่มีชื่อเสียงมากคนหนึ่ง
ร้านกาแฟนี่ตกแต่งร้านได้ดีมาก มีบรรยากาศที่สบายๆและน่านั่งอ่านหนังสือทั้งวัน กาแฟและของกินเล่นก็มีราคาถูกกว่าร้านกาแฟระดับเดียวกัน พนักงานก็สุภาพเรียบร้อย และปล่อยให้ลูกค้าเดินเล่นทั่วร้านอย่างสบายใจ เราก็ชมร้านและภาพวาดอย่างเพลิดเพลิน เราถ่ายรูปมาเพื่อเขียนโพสต์ด้วย เราคิดว่าเพื่อนน่าจะแวะมาที่นี่ในวันที่ฝนตกแดดออก ที่นั่นนั่งได้สบายทั้งวัน และมีหนังสือให้อ่านด้วย ถ้าเบื่อก็เดินดูงานศิลป์ในร้านได้
วันนั้นเราได้ชมผลงานของศิลปินชื่อ คุณบุญเหลือ ยางสวย เขาเป็นศิลปินหนุ่มที่มีชื่อเสียงในวงการ เคยมีงานแสดงผลงานเดี่ยวหลายครั้ง และได้รับรางวัลมาแล้วหลายครั้ง ตลอดจนได้ไปแสดงปลงานที่ต่างประเทศด้วย เราเห็นภาพเขียนของคนไทยแล้ว เราทึ่งมากในความสามารถของคนไทย เขามีพรสวรรค์และความสามารถสูงมาก ศิลปินคนนี้พยายามสะท้อนตามเหลื่อมล้ำในสังคมไทยระหว่างคนจนและคนรวย ความยากจนทำให้หลายคนต้องไปมีอาชีพในมุมมืด ที่ไม่ถูกต้องตามกฎหมายและไม่เป็นที่ยอมรับของคนในสังคม เขาใช้ภาพผู้หญิงและสัตว์ เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของการเอารัดเอาเปรียบกันในสังคม ความจริงที่ถูกสาดสะท้อนออกมานั้นเป็นสิ่งที่น่าหดหู่ใจมาก เขาเย้ยด้วยรูปภาพว่า “ทุกคนเท่าเทียมกัน” นั้นไม่เป็นจริง
เราคิดว่าตราบใดที่มีการคอรัปชั่นโดยคนที่มีอำนาจและตำแหน่งสูงๆ สังคมก็คงมีคนเลวที่จ้องจะร่วมกันโกง และทำสิ่งที่ผิดกฎหมายมากขึ้น ความร่ำรวยและอำนาจก็จะตกไปอยู่ในกำมือของคนพวกนี้ เขาก็ยิ่งมีความสามารถในการควบคุมบงการสังคมให้ พวกเขาได้เสวยสุขต่อไป ดังนั้นคนจนและคนระดับล่างที่ไม่มีกำลังทรัพย์และอำนาจก็จะเสียเปรียบตลอดไป
So long as there are rampant corruptions by those rich and powerful people, civil servants including the international networks of global elites via foreign investment projects and loaning aids packages. These people’s political and economic policies will enable their cohorts to continue to benefit at the expense of ordinary people who are trying to service their debts created by international banking conglomerates. The enslavement takes place at the top of the pyramid down to the bottom levels. I just hope that the law of karma will be very efficient in times of dire needs. Unexpected consequences always occur in complex systems and divine interventions remain a possibility.
