An old lighthouse and the traditional "Warnminner Ümgang" fountain

in Pinmapple3 years ago

Hey guys,
today I'm going to the north of Germany, as in my last post, to Warnemünde. I think I have actually already made a post about Warnemünde, but not about the sight I present to you today - the lighthouse, which I was not only recently, but some time ago also allowed to visit from above.

Great view from the old lighthouse of Warnmemünde

Isn't the view great?! This view you get on the old lighthouse of Warnemünde. The old lighthouse stands right next to the Teepott of Warnemünde and is a famous landmark in Warnemünde. It is practically the center of Warnemünde. The tower is over 100 years old and an old monument.

The lighthouse is a little over 35 meters high (think that's a usual height for a lighthouse ;)). In general, it looks quite thin and has two 360 degree balconies on two floors, which is just great, because you have an all-round view of the whole warnnemünde and the sea and the beach. I'm not sure anymore, but I think the photos are from the second floor ;)

The balconies are accessed through a spiral staircase.
More precisely, there are two spiral staircases. The first one leads to the balcony on the second floor and the second one to the higher one.
The two spiral staircases differ in material: the first one, the lower one, is made of granite (the steps), the upper one is partly made of cast iron.
The more than 100 steps to the very top of the second balcony are totally worth it: you have a wonderful view over the promenade, the beach to the cliff Stolteraa (in the very first picture you can see the cliff in the far distance) and over the Baltic Sea.
Also, as you can see in the photos, the pier and the harbor exit, the Old Stream, and even the shipyard and part of the silhouette of Rostock. Even the tower of the Petrikirche in Rostock can be seen.

Since 1978, the lighthouse has shone quasi-automatically and is no longer managed by a lighthouse keeper. Maybe you have noticed other lighthouses at the end of the piers (the pier heads) on my pictures? Together with these much smaller lighthouses, the old lighthouse shows ships the way into Rostock harbor. The fire can be seen a full 24 nautical miles away.

And by whom is the lighthouse looked after / maintained / open to the public ? The old lighthouse is looked after on a voluntary basis by a support association founded especially for it. This association opens the lighthouse for the public from the end of April to the beginning of October for visitors daily from 10.00 to 19.00 o'clock (during Corona the lighthouse has however closed, think we will have there more luck in the summer).

There is a plaque at the bottom of the lighthouse. It is dedicated to Karl Friedrich Kerner (1847-1920), the harbor construction director who helped design and build the old lighthouse.

And here you are shown directly on the platform where you are looking at the moment or which sights or places are located in the direction:
On the photos you can see the north side, west side and east side.

At the very bottom in front of the lighthouse stands a sculpture that at first glance seems a bit strange. Better said, a golden ball on a pedestal (in the picture is still a seagull sitting on top;)).
The ball symbolizes the sun.

From here begins the planetary walk in the direction of the beach promenade (west). It then continues through the coastal forest strip at the cliff Stolteraa (which you can see as said on the first picture in the distance, that is towards the west).

Proportionally to the distance of the planetary orbits you can find information boards about the individual planets on the paths.

one of the pier heads with a smaller lighthouse (you can also walk there quickly within 10 minutes)

The "Umgangsbrunnen" - The walk around fountain

In the picture above you can see the fountain. It is cast in bronze and refers to a tradition. You can find it in the Alexandrinenstraße, parallel to the Alter Strom.
In Low German, the fountain is called "Warnminner Ümgang" (as it says on the sign, Warnemünder Umgang). The fountain was designed by a genuine sculptor from Warnemünde, Wolfgang Friedrich.

And that's what I think is so great about the fountain: On the one hand, its name comes from the Warnemünder Umgang. Also he shows him at the same time: Also on a pedestal like the sun just now are 19 bronze figures in festive dress. They represent the "Ümgang", a very important tradition for the people of Warnemünde. But what exactly is the Umgang now?
The "Umgang" means: When the colorful life moves through Warnemünde... Many centuries ago, the occasion for a Umgang was when Warnemünde, then a fishing village, successfully appointed a new representative to the city of Rostock.
Although today it is no longer about winning the election of a local representative, but the tradition has so prevailed - which I find very great.
On the first weekend in July, many artists, clubs, and tradesmen gather at the fountain and there is a colorful parade through the town.
