Cripple Creek, Colorado day trip

in Pinmapple4 years ago

Hello all, We made a little day trip down to Cripple Creek, Colorado yesterday.
Was a beautiful day to be out even though the mountain views of Pikes Peak and others along our way were a bit hazy from all the wildfires spread around the state.

This was taken from the train ride in Echo Valley. Was pretty cool to hear them sound the train whistle and then hearing it echo back several seconds later.

There are still active Gold mines in the area, here is was viewed from the train ride.

If you view it larger, you can zoom in on one of the old buildings from the 1800's still standing (sort of).

Cripple Creek is at 9,494 feet elevation, and started off as a Gold mining camp
which grew from a population of 500 to over ten thousand in less than three years in the 1890's when one of the largest gold strikes in history (the Independence Lode) was found. The town burned completely during two major fires in the same week in 1896. Afterwards all buildings on the main street and one block either way were required to be built out of brick, giving it the unique appearance it has today. Even though there is still an active gold mine, the town's main attractions are some tourist shops and several gambling casinos.

Here is the narrow gauge train we rode for tour and pictures. The town is also famous for it's views a little later in the fall (Late Sept / early Oct) when the Aspen trees change colors providing fabulous views mixed with the evergreens.

Goin’ up Cripple Creek goin’ in a run
Goin’ up Cripple Creek to have some fun.

Cripple Creek’s wide and Cripple Creek’s deep
I’ll wade old Cripple Creek before I sleep
Roll my breeches to my knees
I’ll wade ol’ Cripple Creek when I please

I went down to Cripple Creek
To see what them girls had to eat
I got drunk and fell against the wall
Old corn likker was the cause of it all

So there really is a Cripple Creek... 😊

Lol, yes, just like the song!

I miss Colorado. I was stationed at Lowry AFB for tech school back in 89 and throughly enjoyed going to Pikes Peak, garden of the gods. Saw Metallica play at Red Rocks, skiing in Breckenridge. I'd have to say its probably my favourite stae of the 40 I've been to. Happy memories. This post makes me want to return!

We love it here. My favorite as well. Love the rapid shifts in weather. We are going from 91F (33.3C) today to 6.5 inches of snow and high temp of 31F (-0.5C) on Tuesday and we're not even up in the mountains. Then back to normal Fall weather for a few weeks I hope.WeatherSept.jpg

One day I'll return :)

I'm sure it's hard to pull away from those beaches and water. Look me up when you get back over.

back in 92 we did a figure 8 road trip. 36 states. I'd very much like to do another road trip ( not as extensive) some poing in the future. I have friends and Fam all over the US. If we do I'll be sure and ping a message. I have an old Air Force Buddy I've not seen since 92 I'd like to visit and hes in colorado now

I did a bit of touristing in my own town yesterday which I think is a cool thing to do from time to time. As someone who likes old stuff this trip you did is something I'd be interested in. Cripple Creek...Hopefully I'm not a cripple by the time I get there to see it.

I'm still hoping to get out and do a bit of my own gold prospecting. That may be some good spots near there still. Just still have that childhood dream of finding some real gold nuggets. Have a decent metal detector, just have to make the time to go I suppose. I hear there is still quite a bit of Gold to be found down your way as well. At least from what they show on TV.

Yeah, there's a bit around here...Faith and I would like to go do some prospecting but it's not as easy as all that I guess. You watch Aussie Gold Hunters? We watch it too...Some of those guys get some pretty decent hauls, but it' shard work. There's one about opal too, same sort of show different product. Outback opal hunters.

I think it would be cool to turn some gold up...I watch a few of your American versions of gold hunting and those chaps sure know how it's done huh? old fever is a real thing though, kind of traps a person in and makes them want more and more. I don't blame them.
