Of course, what we wanted to do the most during our stay in Puerto Madryn was to see whales, it was not for nothing that we traveled more than 16 hours by car from home. Neither my friend's family nor I had ever seen these giant sea animals, so we were all like little kids trying to see one first. Despite the fact that she and I had already been to this place at the beginning of the year, we never imagined that we would return during the high season and we could enjoy such a spectacle, but that's how it was and we couldn't be happier ❤️.
Por supuesto que lo que más queríamos hacer durante nuestra estadía en Puerto Madryn era ver ballenas, no por nada viajamos más de 16 horas en auto saliendo desde casa. Ni la familia de mi amiga ni yo habíamos visto estos animales gigantes del mar, así que todos estábamos como nenes chiquitos tratando de ver alguna primero. A pesar de que ella y yo ya habíamos estado en este lugar a principio de año, nunca nos imaginamos que volveríamos durante la temporada alta y podríamos disfrutar de tal espectáculo, pero así fue y no podíamos estar más felices ❤️.
After doing some research on the internet and with the owners of the apartment we rented, we discovered that the best option for whale watching from the coast was to drive about 17 km to El Doradillo beach. On our second day of travel we went there and saw some that were still wandering around, but since high tide was almost over it didn't take long for them to leave. That is why a few days later we decided to return, this time a little earlier 😃.
Después de investigar un poco, en internet y con los dueños del departamento que alquilamos, descubrimos que la mejor opción para avistaje de ballenas desde la costa era hacer unos 17 km hasta la playa El Doradillo. En nuestro segundo día de viaje fuimos hasta allá y vimos algunas que aún andaban paseando por ahí, pero como ya casi terminaba la hora de la marea alta no tardaron mucho en irse. Es por eso que algunos días después decidimos volver, esta vez un poco más temprano 😃.
Unlike the first time, that day the beach was full of people and the weather was more beautiful, sunny and perfect to drink some mates sitting in front of the sea. And almost as if on purpose, there were a lot of whales hanging around. They walked from one end to the other, as if they wanted us to look at them. The children screamed every time they saw someone go by, and the adults also did the same 😅.
A diferencia de la primera vez, ese día la playa estaba llena de gente y el clima estaba más hermoso, soleado y perfecto para tomar unos mates sentado frente al mar. Y casi como si fuera a propósito, habían un montón de ballenas rondando. Ellas se paseaban de una punta a la otra, como si quisieran que las miráramos. Los niños gritaban cada vez que veían pasar a alguna, y los adutos también hacíamos lo mismo 😅.
At this time of year, the whales come to the coast of the Chubut province to reproduce and it is normal to see the mothers with their calves and also some single calves hanging around. We were sure they were whales, but when they turned and showed their fins at times they looked like sharks. What do you think? 😶
En esta época del año las ballenas llegan hasta las costas de la provincia de Chubut para reproducirse y es normal ver a las mamás con sus crías y también a algunos ballenatos solteros dando vueltas por ahí. Nosotros estábamos seguros de que eran ballenas, pero cuando giraban y mostraban sus aletas por momentos parecían tiburones. ¿Qué piensan? 😶
We could easily identify the whales by the scabs on their skin, which contrast with gray. By informative signage that we read, these hardnesses serve to distinguish them, because each one has a different pattern. Thanks to this, the biologists who work here know that there are whales that return year after year to this area. There was even a whale that has been identified around here since the 80s. Loyal customer of the coasts of El Doradillo! 😅
Podíamos identificar fácilmente a las ballenas por las costras que tienen sobre su piel, que constrasta de color gris. Por cartelería informativa que leímos, estas durezas sirven para distinguirlas, porque cada una tiene un patrón diferente. Gracias a esto, los biólogos que trabajan por aquí saben que hay ballenas que regresan año tras año a esta zona. Incluso había una ballena que la identifican por acá desde los años 80. ¡Cliente fiel de las costas de El Doradillo 😅!
Another curiosity that we read about the Southern Right Whales is that they feed on krill, a small crustacean that is abundant in this area. These giants of the sea, which can measure up to 14 meters, consume more than 2 tons of crustaceans per day. Mothers must eat well to be able to lactate their young until they can fend for themselves and consume their own food, which occurs one year after birth. Pretty quickly they become independent 😅.
Otra curiosidad que leímos sobre las Ballenas Francas Australes es que se alimentan de krill, un pequeño crustáceo que abunda por esta zona. Estos gigantes del mar, que pueden llegar a medir hasta 14 metros, consumen más de 2 toneladas de crustáceo por día. Las madres deben alimentarse bien para poder lactar a sus crías hasta que ellas puedan valerse por si mismas y consumir su propio alimento, lo que ocurre un año después del nacimiento. Bastante rápido se independizan 😅.
Undoubtedly, having the possibility to see these animals for free from the coast is a truly unique experience. In one of the posters I read that they are as enormous as they are fragile and that we must protect them, mainly from illegal hunting and pollution of the oceans. Everyone around here is very committed to caring for the environment, so they are widely aware of that ❤️.
Sin dudas tener la posibilidad de ver a estos animales gratis desde la costa es una experiencia verdaderamente única. En uno de los carteles leí que ellos son tan enormes como frágiles y que debemos protegerlos, principalmente de la caza ilegal y de la contaminación de los océanos. Todos por acá estan muy comprometidos con el cuidado del medio ambiente, así que son ampliamente conscientes de eso ❤️.
If you are in the Puerto Madryn area, do not miss the opportunity to get to El Doradillo Beach, by private vehicle, hired excursion or if you are brave, by bicycle. Some specimens can also be seen from the beach in the city center, but it is in this part that they are seen more closely. And find out the time of high tide, which is when there is a better chance of seeing them: it is better to spend the day watching the whole show ❤️.
Si se encuentran por la zona de Puerto Madryn no pierdan la oportunidad de llegar a la Playa El Doradillo, en vehículo particular, excursión contratada o si son valientes, en bicicleta. Desde la playa del centro de la ciudad también pueden avistarse algunos ejemplares, pero en esta parte es cuando se ven más de cerca. Y averigüen el horario de la marea alta que es cuando hay más posibilidad de verlas: mejor pasar el día mirando todo el show completo ❤️.

Qué bonito paisaje y qué guay tiene que ser el ver ballenas! Me llama mucho la atención el mar, en todos sus aspectos, incluidas las criaturas que habitan en él. Creo que a día de hoy no conocemos todas las formas de vida que pueden existir en las profundidades, y es posible que también estén enterradas antiguas arquitecturas o ciudades de nuestros antepasados. Me encantaría aprender buceo para ver más de cerca a esos animalitos pero creo que no es sencillo aguantar la presión que hace ahí abajo, así que entretanto me conformaría así, avistándolas desde lejos jaja

We were all surprised by how close they were to the shore: apparently in this part the sea got deep very quickly.
And the Hive whales are fine, I see them among us every day, but seeing a real one on the beach was another level 😎.
