As the days went by during my stay in Ushuaia, I slowly felt like I was running out of trekking companions. It wasn't that there weren't enough people hanging around the hostel, but rather that all the guests preferred to do the traditional treks, which I, of course, had already done. Finding a hiking partner was becoming difficult, but not impossible. Luckily for me, one of those days a Spanish guy arrived with whom I quickly became friends, and he had no problem going with me to those less-touristy spots in the mountains 😃.
A medida que iban pasando los días durante mi estadía en Ushuaia, lentamente sentía que me iba quedando sin acompañantes para los trekkings. No era que no hubiese gente dando vueltas en el hostel, sino que todos los huéspedes preferían hacer los trekkings tradicionales que yo, por supuesto, ya había hecho. Conseguir un compañero de caminata se estaba volviendo dificil, pero no imposible. Para mi suerte, uno de esos días llegó un chico español con quien nos hicimos amigos muy rápido y no tuvo problema en ir conmigo hasta esos puntos no tan turísticos entre las montañas 😃.
The most popular treks in Ushuaia are Laguna Esmeralda, Vinciguerra Glacier, and Martial Glacier. Whenever a new guest arrived, these were the three things they wanted to do first, and very few people stayed more than three days at the hostel. But in Fernando's case, he had booked 10 days in total, so after completing all those treks on his own, he decided to join me on the remaining ones. One of them was a 12-km trail that took you to Sumbarino Waterfall and the lagoon of the same name.
Los trekkings más conocidos en Ushuaia son la Laguna Esmeralda, el Glaciar Vinciguerra y el Glaciar Martial. Cada vez que llegaba un nuevo huésped, estas eran las 3 cosas que querían hacer primero y muy poca gente se quedaba más de tres días en el hostel. Pero en el caso de Fernando, él había reservado 10 días en total, así que después de hacer todos esos trekkings por su cuenta, decidió acompañarme a mí en los que me faltaban. Uno de ellos era aquel sendero de 12 km en total que te llevaba hasta la Cascada Sumbarino y la laguna del mismo nombre.
The day we chose for this trek didn't have the best weather, but the lack of rain was enough for us. Fernando had told me he lives in a mountainous area near the Pyrenees, so he was already very accustomed to this type of hike. But what I had never seen was a beaver dam or the environmental disaster these animals cause. Beavers are a pest in Ushuaia. Artificially introduced just over 80 years ago, they have built burrows wherever they pass, and their presence is unmistakable.
El día que elegimos para este trekking no era el del mejor clima, pero con que no lloviera era suficiente para nosotros. Fernando me había contado que vive en una zona montañosa cercana a Los Pirineos, por lo que ya estaba muy acostumbrado a este tipo de paseos. Pero lo que nunca había visto era una castorera ni el desastre ambiental que producen estos animales. Los castores son una plaga en Ushuaia que, introducidos artificialmente hace poco más de 80 años, han construido madrigueras en cualquier lugar en el que pasaron y su presencia es inconfundible.
The first part of the hike was peaceful, surrounded by forest and beaver dams, and about two hours into the hike, we reached our first stop: the waterfall. This waterfall is located off the main trail, in an area fairly covered in trees and surrounded by high humidity, so it was quite cold. Despite being the end of January, in the middle of summer, this climate wasn't felt at all at the end of the world.
La primera parte del recorrido fue tranquila entre el bosque y las castoreras, y unas dos horas después de empezar la caminata, llegamos a la primera parada: la cascada. Esta cascada está de pasada en el sendero principal, en una zona bastante tapada de árboles y con mucha humedad circundante, por lo que hacía bastante frío. A pesar de ser finales de Enero, en pleno verano, en el fin del mundo no se sentía para nada este clima.
We only stayed at the waterfall for a while, drinking water and eating some nuts, before continuing our trek further. According to our research, after the waterfall, we had to walk another hour to reach the lagoon. This section was considerably more difficult than the first, as there was a lot of muddy uphill, and at times, we had to scramble a bit with our hands.
Solo nos quedamos un rato en la cascada, tomando agua y comiendo un poco de frutos secos, hasta que continuamos nuestro trekking hacia más allá. Según lo que habíamos investigado, después de la cascada teníamos que caminar una hora más para llegar a la laguna. Este tramo fue considerablemente más difícil que el primero, ya que había mucha subida con barro y por momentos, tuvimos que trepar un poco ayudándonos con nuestras manos.
I should also say that along this entire stretch, the trail isn't very well marked, so having offline maps was very helpful. Finally, we were able to reach the lagoon, which, despite the gray sky, had some very beautiful colors. Depending on where you stood, the color of the water changed. My favorite spot was one where the water was completely emerald green (even more emerald than the actual Emerald Lagoon).
También debo decir que en todo este tramo, el sendero no está muy bien señalizado, por lo que haber contado con mapas sin conexión fue muy útil. Finalmente, pudimos llegar a la laguna, que a pesar del cielo gris, tenía unos colores muy lindos. Dependiendo del lugar en el que te pararas, el color del agua se veía de una tonalidad u otra. Mi punto preferido fue uno en donde el agua se veía completamente verde esmeralda (incluso este color era más esmeralda que el de la real Laguna Esmeralda).
The Sumbmarine Lagoon has this name because it's supposedly shaped like this vehicle when viewed from above. I took the time to look at the lagoon on a satellite map, and I think the name is a bit controversial. I think it takes a lot of imagination to figure out the shape, but I still think it's acceptable. What do you think?
La Laguna Submarino tiene este nombre porque supuestamente tiene forma de este vehículo si miramos desde arriba. Me tomé el trabajo de mirar la laguna en el mapa con la visión de satélite y creo que es un poco polémico el nombre. Creo que hay que tener mucha imaginación para encontrarle la forma, pero igualmente creo que sigue siendo aceptable. ¿Qué opinan?
Anyway, Fernando and I made our second and main stop here for lunch. Luckily, it didn't rain, but the weather was awful. The thing about trekking in Ushuaia is that you're warm the whole way, but five minutes after you stop, you're already freezing again. This lagoon was very beautiful, with its contrasting color against the almost snowless mountains, but the downside was that there wasn't much protection from the wind. This considerably shortened our stay there, as did the cloud that slowly began to stalk us 😂.
Como sea, Fernando y yo hicimos nuestra segunda y principal parada acá para tener nuestro almuerzo. Por suerte, no llovió, pero que el clima estaba feo, lo estaba. Lo que tienen los trekkings en Ushuaia es que todo el camino vas con calor, pero a los cinco minutos que frenas, ya te empezas a congelar de nuevo. Esta laguna era muy hermosa, con su color constrastante en las montañas casi sin nieve, pero lo malo era que no había mucho reparo del viento. Esto acortó considerablemente nuestra estadía ahí, así como también la nube que nos empezó a acechar lentamente 😂.
The return journey along the same path we had taken felt like a relief. Protected from the wind and cold, at least for me, my hands were starting to thaw. On our way back, we came across some curious shapes on the faces of the trees, surely made by other hikers before us. Of course, we didn't miss the opportunity to make our own faces and leave our mark on this trek.
El camino de regreso por el mismo lugar por el que fuimos se sintió como un alivio. Protegidos del viento y frío, al menos a mí se me empezaron a descongelar las manos. Cuando volvíamos, nos encontramos con unas curiosas formas en las caras de los árboles, hechas seguramente por otros caminantes antes que nosotros. Por supuesto no nos perdimos la oportunidad de hacer nuestra propia cara y dejar nuestra huella en este trekking.
The surprise we had before leaving was that we managed to see a beaver swimming in its dam (the video is below). That was the first beaver I saw during my entire stay in Ushuaia, even though I had been trekking regularly for over four months and had come across dozens of beaver dams. Seeing a beaver was the perfect ending to this trek, one I hadn't been able to do on my list and which, luckily, I didn't have to do alone. This was another great day in Ushuaia, where I couldn't possibly get bored 😃.
La sorpresa que tuvimos antes de irnos fue que logramos ver a un castor nadando en su dique (dejo el video abajo). Ese fue el primer castor que vi en toda mi estadía en Ushuaia, a pesar de que hace más de cuatro meses que hacía trekking regularmente y que me había cruzado con decenas de castoreras. Ver a un castor fue como el cierre perfecto para este trekking, uno de los que me faltaba en la lista y que por suerte, no tuve que hacer sola. Este fue otro día genial en Ushuaia, donde me fue imposible aburrirme 😃.

Los castores pueden hacer grandes desastres, la zona luce desértica, pero lo demás valió la pena para observar el hermoso paisaje.
La verdad hay que tener bastante imaginación para ver en esa laguna un submarino, por lo menos no lo logro percibir (jaja).

Hermoso lugar, sí que se ve esmeralda esa laguna. A pesar del frío y del tiempo nublado, la experiencia es increíble y muy agradable. Siempre tienes la suerte de encontrar un compañero de aventuras, Fernando fue perfecto para este recorrido ☺️.
Me gustó la creatividad al darle vida a esos árboles, es una forma de indicar que pasaron por allí y dejaron su huella 👣, aunque si los veo de noche saldría corriendo pues representaría el bosque embrujado 😂

I love your journey the place looks magical like in the movies they seem to hold an enormous amount of ecological aura. I am always amaze reading articles about how Beavers manage to create those dams it almost seem to be made by humans but to my surprise it's those Beaver luckily those dams don't just serve as their shelter or for protection in fact the dams also helped the ecosystem reproduce and regrow causing ecological effects influencing water to flow around the surroundings.
In the case of what I saw in Ushuaia, everything around the beaver dams looked terrible. They broke all the trees and damaged the forest. It was terrible.

Siempre es un problema introducir un animal que no es propio del lugar, se hizo mucho con la mejor intención, Pero los resultados terminaron siempre por ser desastrosos.
La forma del agua no me recordó un submarino, más bien me hizo recordar otra nave del imaginario popular:
