It would be hypocritical of me to complain about tourists crowding around looking at a beautiful landscape, because after all, I am one myself. But that doesn't allow me to make the point that the Emerald Lagoon is always quite crowded. And if you went to Ushuaia and didn't visit the Emerald Lagoon, it's like your trip would be incomplete. Its beauty also justifies why there are so many visitors, and even more so in summer, when it shows the colour that characterises it in all its splendour ❤️.

This trek, considered to be of low/medium difficulty, is the most famous trek to be done near the city. It is a 5 km trail in the forest, perfectly marked to be done on your own. In addition, in high season, literally hundreds of tourists a day trek this place. However, there is also the option of doing the trail with a mountain guide. In the summer, this guided hike cost $80, something only those who didn't know that this trail is quite simple will have paid for.

As the lagoon is located 20 km from the city of Ushuaia, to do this trail it is necessary to get to its entrance by private vehicle, excursion, private transfer, or the classic ‘hitchhiking’. In my case, before visiting this place, I took it upon myself to form a new Couchsurfing group of people who wanted to visit this place. Our main idea was to visit the Ojo del Albino Glacier, a trekking that starts behind the lagoon, which obligatorily invites you to walk this path full of people of all ages.

The elevation profile of this trail is not that demanding, as it is mostly a flat path. It has the difficulty of being a bit uneven terrain, with a lot of mud and roots in the forest part, and peat in the open parts. The National Park administration has taken this into account, and has provided a number of wooden footbridges so that visitors do not have to sink into the spongy terrain. That's the fun part of the trek, the obstacles, but I understand if they want to make it more accessible and touristy.

It took us an hour and a quarter to walk this trail at a brisk pace. In the last part, we bordered a river that already gives a spoiler of the colour of the lagoon. However, when you arrive and see the entire lagoon, it is impossible not to be mesmerised by the landscape. It is a large greenish mirror of water, with mountains of rocks behind it, which even in the middle of January are still covered in snow. A dream landscape indeed.

As beautiful as the lagoon is and as visited as it is, it is still free to visit (unless you pay for a guide or a tour). To get there we only had to pay $20 for an Uber, which, divided between four people, was more than economical. One of the things I like most about the lagoon, which I had already visited on my first trip to Ushuaia, is that no matter how much sunlight there is, it maintains its beautiful colour. You can see that the day was quite cloudy, but the green of the water was unchanged.

The good thing about the summer was that it allowed us to trek until late: that day it was 4 PM and we had just arrived at the lagoon (because I had worked until 2 PM). We still had to start the second trail, with two hours more uphill, but we knew that we still had enough daylight as it was getting dark after 9 PM. In the meantime we rested for a while at the lagoon, doing our photo shoots for the nets and stretching our legs a bit, because the most difficult stretch to the glacier was about to start.

There were always a lot of people, but my recommendation to all guests arriving at the hostel was not to miss the Emerald Lagoon. Despite the many people around, the mountain is big and has room for everyone. Drinking mates with that view is priceless, because with that colour the lagoon hypnotised you. Not for nothing is this trekking the most famous in Ushuaia: can you say that you don't want to visit a place as beautiful as this one ❤️?

What you say is so true. Anyone who passes through Ushuaia and doesn't see the Emerald Lagoon feels as if they've never been there. This beautiful lagoon is so important to this city.
What a charming place, its beauty, and its easy access makes this lagoon a great temptation to visit, since you don't need to pay a guide for the tour.
It's been great that you've visited this beautiful lagoon on several occasions, dear friend @lauramica.
I appreciate you sharing these beautiful images.
Have a great day.
Hi Luis. The walk to Esmeralda Lagoon is a must; it's beautiful, and I never tire of visiting.
Greetings, thanks for stopping by 💕.
The valley is so wide with so many natural viewpoints. The river was kind of having a cute pathway. The mountains from beyond is very beautiful. But the lake captures my heart.
Yes, is a great landscape 💕
I remember when my friends and I visited one of the lagoons here in our provice years ago. And its quite exhausting getting near the lagoon that took us around 2 hours of trail, yet it was fun. But after all, it was all worth it. Hoping to visit more lagoons in the near future. 🙏
That sounds great. Hope you can repeat it :)
Amazing place!
Enjoy your trip. Hope you have a nice one :)
Thank you!
